Psalms 1

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 Blessed is the man
The singular Hebrew word for  man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person; see Preface

who bwalks not in cthe counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in dthe way of sinners,
nor esits in fthe seat of gscoffers;
2but his hdelight is in the law
Or instruction
of the Lord,
and on his jlaw he meditates day and night.
3 He is like ka tree
planted by lstreams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its mleaf does not wither.
nIn all that he does, he prospers.
4The wicked are not so,
but are like ochaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked pwill not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in qthe congregation of the righteous;
6for the Lord rknows sthe way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalms 144

My Rock and My Fortress

Of David.

1 Blessed be the Lord, my trock,
uwho trains my hands for war,
and my fingers for battle;
2he is my vsteadfast love and my wfortress,
my xstronghold and my deliverer,
my yshield and he in whom I take refuge,
who zsubdues peoples
Many Hebrew manuscripts, Dead Sea Scroll, Jerome, Syriac, Aquila; most Hebrew manuscripts  subdues my people
under me.
3 O Lord, abwhat is man that you acregard him,
or the son of man that you think of him?
4 adMan is like a breath;
his days are like aea passing afshadow.
5 agBow your heavens, O Lord, and come down!
ahTouch the mountains so that they smoke!
6 aiFlash forth the lightning and scatter them;
ajsend out your arrows and rout them!
7 akStretch out your hand from on high;
alrescue me and deliver me from the many waters,
from the hand amof foreigners,
8whose mouths speak anlies
and whose right hand is aoa right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing apa new song to you, O God;
upon aqa ten-stringed harp I will play to you,
10who gives victory to kings,
who arrescues David his servant from the cruel sword.
11Rescue me and deliver me
from the hand asof foreigners,
whose mouths speak atlies
and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
12 May our sons in their youth
be like auplants full grown,
our daughters like avcorner pillars
cut for the structure of a palace;
13 awmay our granaries be full,
axproviding all kinds of produce;
may our sheep bring forth thousands
and ten thousands in our fields;
14may our cattle be heavy with young,
suffering no mishap or failure in bearing;
Hebrew with no breaking in or going out

may there be no azcry of distress in our streets!
15 baBlessed are the people to whom such blessings fall!
bbBlessed are the people whose God is the Lord!
