Psalms 1

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 Blessed is the man
The singular Hebrew word for  man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person; see Preface

who bwalks not in cthe counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in dthe way of sinners,
nor esits in fthe seat of gscoffers;
2but his hdelight is in the law
Or instruction
of the Lord,
and on his jlaw he meditates day and night.
3 He is like ka tree
planted by lstreams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its mleaf does not wither.
nIn all that he does, he prospers.
4The wicked are not so,
but are like ochaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked pwill not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in qthe congregation of the righteous;
6for the Lord rknows sthe way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalms 3

Save Me, O My God

A Psalm of David, twhen he fled from Absalom his son.

1 O Lord, uhow many are my foes!
Many are vrising against me;
2many are saying of my soul,
w"There is no salvation for him in God."  Selah
The meaning of the Hebrew word  Selah, used frequently in the Psalms, is uncertain. It may be a musical or liturgical direction

3 But you, O Lord, are ya shield zabout me,
my glory, and aathe lifter of my head.
4I abcried aloud to the Lord,
and he acanswered me from his adholy hill.  Selah
5 I aelay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
6I afwill not be afraid of many thousands of people
who have agset themselves against me all around.
7 ahArise, O Lord!
Save me, O my God!
For you aistrike all my enemies on the cheek;
you ajbreak the teeth of the wicked.
8 akSalvation belongs to the Lord;
your blessing be on your people!  Selah
