Psalms 1

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 Blessed is the man
The singular Hebrew word for  man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person; see Preface

who bwalks not in cthe counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in dthe way of sinners,
nor esits in fthe seat of gscoffers;
2but his hdelight is in the law
Or instruction
of the Lord,
and on his jlaw he meditates day and night.
3 He is like ka tree
planted by lstreams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its mleaf does not wither.
nIn all that he does, he prospers.
4The wicked are not so,
but are like ochaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked pwill not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in qthe congregation of the righteous;
6for the Lord rknows sthe way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalms 34

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good

This psalm is an acrostic poem, each verse beginning with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet
Of David, when he uchanged his behavior before vAbimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

1 I will bless the Lord wat all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2My soul xmakes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and ybe glad.
3Oh, zmagnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
4 I aasought the Lord, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
5Those who look to him are abradiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.
6 acThis poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
and adsaved him out of all his troubles.
7 aeThe angel of the Lord afencamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8 Oh, agtaste and see that ahthe Lord is good!
aiBlessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
9Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack!
10 ajThe young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who akseek the Lord lack no good thing.
11 alCome, O children, listen to me;
amI will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 anWhat man is there who desires life
and loves many days, that he may aosee good?
13 apKeep your tongue from evil
and your lips from aqspeaking deceit.
14 arTurn away from evil and do good;
seek peace and aspursue it.
15 atThe eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
auand his ears toward their cry.
16 avThe face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to awcut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 axWhen the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18The Lord is near to aythe brokenhearted
and saves azthe crushed in spirit.
19 baMany are the afflictions of the righteous,
bbbut the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20He keeps all his bones;
bcnot one of them is broken.
21 bdAffliction will slay the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22The Lord beredeems the life of his servants;
none of those who take refuge in him will be bfcondemned.
