Psalms 1

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 Blessed is the man ^{▼▼The singular Hebrew word for man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person; see Preface}
who ^bwalks not in ^cthe counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in ^dthe way of sinners,
nor ^esits in ^fthe seat of ^gscoffers;
2 but his ^hdelight is in the law ^{▼▼Or instruction} of the Lord,
and on his ^jlaw he meditates day and night.
3 He is like ^ka tree
planted by ^lstreams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its ^mleaf does not wither.
ⁿIn all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like ^ochaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked ^pwill not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in ^qthe congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord ^rknows ^sthe way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

The Lord Reigns

1 ^tThe Lord reigns, ^ulet the earth rejoice;
let the many ^vcoastlands be glad!
2 ^wClouds and thick darkness are all around him;
^xrighteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 ^yFire goes before him
and burns up his adversaries all around.
4 His ^zlightnings light up the world;
the earth sees and ^aatrembles.
5 The mountains ^abmelt like ^acwax before the Lord,
before ^adthe Lord of all the earth.
6 ^aeThe heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all ^afthe peoples see his glory.
7 All worshipers of images are ^agput to shame,
who make their boast in ^ahworthless idols;
^aiworship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and ^ajis glad,
and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
because of your judgments, O Lord.
9 For you, O Lord, are ^akmost high over all the earth;
you are exalted far above ^alall gods.
10 O you who love the Lord, ^amhate evil!
He ^anpreserves the lives of his ^aosaints;
he ^apdelivers them from the hand of the wicked.

and joy for the upright in heart.
