Psalms 1

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

1 Blessed is the man
The singular Hebrew word for  man (ish) is used here to portray a representative example of a godly person; see Preface

who bwalks not in cthe counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in dthe way of sinners,
nor esits in fthe seat of gscoffers;
2but his hdelight is in the law
Or instruction
of the Lord,
and on his jlaw he meditates day and night.
3 He is like ka tree
planted by lstreams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its mleaf does not wither.
nIn all that he does, he prospers.
4The wicked are not so,
but are like ochaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked pwill not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in qthe congregation of the righteous;
6for the Lord rknows sthe way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalms 2

The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed

1 tWhy do uthe nations rage
Or  nations noisily assemble

and the peoples plot in vain?
2The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his wAnointed, saying,
3“Let us xburst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
4 He who ysits in the heavens zlaughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5Then he will speak to them in his aawrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6“As for me, I have abset my King
on acZion, my adholy hill.”
7 I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, ae“You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
8Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and afthe ends of the earth your possession.
9You shall agbreak
Revocalization yields (compare Septuagint)  You shall rule
them with aia rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like aja potter’s vessel.”
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 akServe the Lord with alfear,
and amrejoice with antrembling.
12 aoKiss apthe Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his aqwrath is quickly kindled.
arBlessed are all who take refuge in him.
