Why Do You Hide Yourself?

1 Why, O Lord, do you stand ^afar away?
Why ^bdo you hide yourself in ^ctimes of trouble?
2 In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor;
let them ^dbe caught in the schemes that they have devised.
3For the wicked ^eboasts of the desires of his soul,
and the one greedy for gain ^fcurses ▼

▼Or  and he blesses the one greedy for gain

and ^hrenounces the Lord.
4In the pride of his face ▼

▼Or  of his anger

the wicked does not ^jseek him; ▼

▼Or  the wicked says, “He will not call to account”

all his thoughts are, ^l“There is no God.”
5His ways prosper at all times;
your judgments are on high, ^mout of his sight;
as for all his foes, he ⁿpuffs at them.
6He ^osays in his heart, “I shall not be moved;
throughout all generations I ^pshall not meet adversity.”
7 ^qHis mouth is filled with cursing and ^rdeceit and ^soppression;
^tunder his tongue are ^umischief and ^viniquity.
8He sits in ambush in the villages;
in ^whiding places he murders the innocent.
His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless;
9he lurks in ambush like ^xa lion in his ^ythicket;
he ^zlurks that he may seize the poor;
he seizes the poor when he draws him into his ^aanet.
10The helpless are crushed, sink down,
and fall by his might.
11He says in his heart, “God has forgotten,
he has ^abhidden his face, he ^acwill never see it.”
12 ^adArise, O Lord; O God, ^aelift up your hand;
^afforget not the afflicted.
13Why does the wicked ^agrenounce God
and say in his heart, “You will not ^ahcall to account”?
14But you do see, for you ^ainote mischief and vexation,
that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless ^ajcommits himself;
you have been ^akthe helper of the fatherless.
15 ^alBreak the arm of the wicked and evildoer;
^amcall his wickedness to account till you find none.
16 ^anThe Lord is king forever and ever;
the ^aonations perish from his land.
17O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will ^apstrengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
18to ^aqdo justice to the fatherless and ^arthe oppressed,
so that ^asman who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

Psalms 83

O God, Do Not Keep Silence

A Song. A Psalm of ^atAsaph.

1 O God, do not keep silence;
^audo not hold your peace or be still, O God!
2For behold, your enemies ^avmake an uproar;
those who hate you have ^awraised their heads.
3They lay ^axcrafty plans against your people;
they consult together against your ^aytreasured ones.
4They say, “Come, ^azlet us wipe them out as a nation;
let the name of Israel be remembered no more!”
5For they conspire with one accord;
against you they make a covenant—
6the tents of ^baEdom and ^bbthe Ishmaelites,
^bcMoab and ^bdthe Hagrites,
7 ^beGebal and ^bfAmmon and ^bgAmalek,
^bhPhilistia with the inhabitants of ^biTyre;
8 ^bjAsshur also has joined them;
they are the strong arm of ^bkthe children of Lot.  Selah
9 Do to them as you did to ^blMidian,
as to ^bmSisera and Jabin at ^bnthe river Kishon,
10who were destroyed at ^boEn-dor,
who became ^bpdung for the ground.
11Make their nobles like ^bqOreb and Zeeb,
all their princes like ^brZebah and Zalmunna,
12who said, ^bs“Let us take possession for ourselves
of the pastures of God.”
13 O my God, make them like ^btwhirling dust, ▼

▼Or  like a tumbleweed

like ^bvchaff before the wind.
14As ^bwfire consumes the forest,
as the flame ^bxsets the mountains ablaze,
15so may you pursue them ^bywith your tempest
and terrify them with your hurricane!
16 ^bzFill their faces with shame,
that they may seek your name, O Lord.
17Let them be ^caput to shame and dismayed forever;
let them perish in disgrace,
18that they may ^cbknow that you alone,
^ccwhose name is the Lord,
are ^cdthe Most High over all the earth.
