Psalms 115:4-8

4 aTheir idols are silver and gold,
bthe work of human hands.
5They have mouths, cbut do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
6They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
7They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
and they do not make a sound in their throat.
8 dThose who make them become like them;
so do all who trust in them.

Psalms 135:15-18

15 eThe idols of the nations are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
16They have mouths, but do not speak;
they have eyes, but do not see;
17they have ears, but do not hear,
nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18Those who make them become like them,
so do all who trust in them.

Isaiah 41:24

24Behold, fyou are nothing,
and your work is less than nothing;
an abomination is he who chooses you.

Isaiah 44:9-20

The Folly of Idolatry

9 gAll who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. 10 hWho fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing? 11 iBehold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. Let them all assemble, let them stand forth. They shall be terrified; they shall be put to shame together.

12 jThe ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm. He becomes hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water and is faint. 13The carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. kHe shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house. 14 lHe cuts down cedars, or he chooses a cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. 15Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it. 16Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, “Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!” 17And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. mHe prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god!”

18They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand. 19No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, “Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an nabomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?” 20 oHe feeds on pashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is there not qa lie in my right hand?”

Jeremiah 10:2-16

2Thus says the Lord:

Learn not the way of the nations,
nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens
because the nations are dismayed at them,
3 rfor the customs of the peoples are vanity.
Or vapor, or mist

tA tree from the forest is cut down
and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.
4 uThey decorate it with silver and gold;
vthey fasten it with hammer and nails
so that it cannot move.
5Their idols
Hebrew They
are like scarecrows in a cucumber field,
and xthey cannot speak;
ythey have to be carried,
for they cannot walk.
Do not be afraid of them,
zfor they cannot do evil,
neither is it in them to do good.”
6 aaThere is none like you, O Lord;
you are great, and your name is great in might.
7 abWho would not fear you, O King of the nations?
For this is your due;
for among all the wise ones of the nations
and in all their kingdoms
there is none like you.
8 acThey are both adstupid and foolish;
the instruction of idols is but wood!
9 aeBeaten silver is brought from afTarshish,
and gold from agUphaz.
ahThey are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith;
their clothing is violet and purple;
aithey are all the work of skilled men.
10 ajBut the Lord is the true God;
akhe is the living God and the everlasting King.
At his wrath the earth quakes,
and the nations cannot endure his indignation.
11Thus shall you say to them: al“The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth amshall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”
This verse is in Aramaic

12 aoIt is he who apmade the earth by his power,
aqwho established the world by his wisdom,
and arby his understanding stretched out the heavens.
13 asWhen he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
atand he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
auHe makes lightning avfor the rain,
awand he brings forth the wind axfrom his storehouses.
14 ayEvery man is stupid and without knowledge;
azevery goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,
for his images are false,
baand there is no breath in them.
15They are worthless, a work of delusion;
at the time of their punishment they shall perish.
16Not like these is he who is bbthe portion of Jacob,
for he is the one who formed all things,
bcand Israel is the tribe of his inheritance;
bdthe Lord of hosts is his name.

Habakkuk 2:18

18 beWhat profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, bfa teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes bgspeechless idols!
