Psalms 137:7

7 Remember, O Lord, against the aEdomites
bthe day of Jerusalem,
how they said, c“Lay it bare, lay it bare,
down to its foundations!”

Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

1 Draw near, dO nations, to hear,
and give attention, O peoples!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
2For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their host;
he has edevoted them to destruction,
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verse 5
has given them over for slaughter.
3Their slain shall be cast out,
and gthe stench of their corpses shall rise;
hthe mountains shall flow with their blood.
4 iAll the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall fall,
as leaves fall from the vine,
like leaves falling from the fig tree.
5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon jEdom,
upon the people kI have devoted to destruction.
6The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
lFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 mWild oxen shall nfall with them,
and oyoung steers with pthe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 qFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 rAnd the streams of Edom
Hebrew her streams
shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10Night and day tit shall not be quenched;
uits smoke shall go up forever.
vFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 wBut the hawk and the porcupine
The identity of the animals rendered  hawk and  porcupine is uncertain
shall possess it,
the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
yHe shall stretch the line of zconfusion
Hebrew formlessness
over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 abThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of acjackals,
an abode for ostriches.
Or owls

14 aeAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird
Identity uncertain
settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there agthe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 ahHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from aiEdom,
in crimsoned garments from ajBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
akmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your alapparel red,
and your garments like his amwho treads in the winepress?
3 an“I have trodden the winepress alone,
aoand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 aqFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but asthere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
atI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning auEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

av“Is wisdom no more in awTeman?
axHas counsel perished from the prudent?
ayHas their wisdom vanished?
8 azFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of baDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
bbthe time when I punish him.
9 bcIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave bdgleanings?
beIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 bfBut I have stripped Esau bare;
bgI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and bhhe is no more.
11 biLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
bjand let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: bkIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, blwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 bmFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that bnBozrah shall become boa horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 bpI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
bq“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you bsmake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 btEdom shall become a horror. buEveryone who passes by it will be horrified bvand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 bwAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their bxneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, byno man shall dwell there, bzno man shall sojourn in her. 19 caBehold, cblike a lion coming up from ccthe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. ceFor who is like me? cfWho will summon me? cgWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against chEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of ciTeman: cjEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall ckthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, clone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against cmBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart cnof a woman in her birth pains.”

Ezekiel 25:8-14

Prophecy Against Moab and Seir

8Thus says the Lord God: Because coMoab and cpSeir
Septuagint lacks  and Seir
said, ‘Behold, the crhouse of Judah is like all the other nations,’
9therefore csI will lay open the flank of Moab from the cities, from its cities on its frontier, the glory of the country, ctBeth-jeshimoth, cuBaal-meon, and cvKiriathaim. 10I will give it cwalong with the Ammonites cxto the people of the East as a possession, cythat the Ammonites may be remembered no more among the nations, 11 czand I will execute judgments upon Moab. daThen they will know that I am the Lord.

Prophecy Against Edom

12Thus says the Lord God: Because dbEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended dcin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, ddI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from deTeman even to dfDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom dgby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and dhthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 diSon of man, djset your face dkagainst dlMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: dmBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and dnI will stretch out my hand against you, doand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 dpI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5Because dqyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword drat the time of their calamity, dsat the time of their final punishment, 6therefore, dtas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; dubecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 dvI will make Mount Seir a waste dwand a desolation, and I will cut off from it dxall who come and go. 8And I will fill dyits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all dzyour ravines eathose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 ebI will make you a perpetual desolation, and ecyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then edyou will know that I am the Lord.

10Because you said, ee‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and efwe will take possession of them’—although the egLord was there 11therefore, ehas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you eiaccording to the anger and ejenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And ekI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12And you shall know that I am the Lord.

el“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; emthey are given us to devour.’
13And enyou magnified yourselves against me eowith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14Thus says the Lord God: epWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15As you eqrejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, erMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then esthey will know that I am the Lord.
