^bthe day of Jerusalem,
how they said, ^c“Lay it bare, lay it bare,
down to its foundations!”

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from ^dEdom,
in crimsoned garments from ^eBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
^fmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning ^gEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

^h“Is wisdom no more in ⁱTeman?
^jHas counsel perished from the prudent?
^kHas their wisdom vanished?
8 ^lFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of ^mDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
ⁿthe time when I punish him.
9 ^oIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave ^pgleanings?
^qIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 ^rBut I have stripped Esau bare;
^sI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and ^the is no more.
11 ^uLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
^vand let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: ^w“If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, ^xwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 ^yFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that ^zBozrah shall become ^aaa horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 ^abI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
^ac“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock, ▼

Though you ^aemake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 ^af“Edom shall become a horror. ^agEveryone who passes by it will be horrified ^ahand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 ^aiAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their ^ajneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, ^akno man shall dwell there, ^alno man shall sojourn in her. 19 ^amBehold, ^anlike a lion coming up from ^aothe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him ▼

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12“Thus says the Lord God: Because ^baEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended ^bbin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, ^bcI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from ^bdTeman even to ^beDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom ^bfby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and ^bgthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Amos 1:11-12

11Thus says the Lord:

^bh“For three transgressions of ^biEdom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
^bjbecause he pursued his brother with the sword
^bkand cast off all pity,
^bland his anger tore perpetually,
^bmand he kept his wrath forever.
12So I will send a fire upon ^bnTeman,
and it shall devour the strongholds of ^boBozrah.”

Obadiah 1-9

1The vision of Obadiah.

Edom Will Be Humbled

Thus says the Lord God ^bpconcerning Edom:
^bqWe have heard a report from the Lord,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
“Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”
2Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
you shall be utterly despised. ▼

3 ^bsThe pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rock, ▼

in your lofty dwelling,
^buwho say in your heart,
“Who will bring me down to the ground?”
4Though you soar aloft like the eagle,
though your nest is set among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,

declares the Lord.
5 If ^bvthieves came to you,
if plunderers came by night—
how you have been destroyed!—
would they not steal only enough for themselves?
If ^bwgrape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave gleanings?
6 ^bxHow Esau has been pillaged,
his treasures sought out!
7All your allies have driven you to your border;
those at peace with you have deceived you;
they have prevailed against you;
^bythose who eat your bread ▼

have set a trap beneath you—

no understanding.
8 ^ccWill I not on that day, declares the Lord,
destroy the wise men out of Edom,
and understanding out of ^cdMount Esau?
9And your mighty men shall be dismayed, ^ceO Teman,
so that every man from ^cfMount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.
