Psalms 40:6-8

6 aIn sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open bear.
Hebrew ears you have dug for me

Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required.
7Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
in the scroll of the book it is written dof me:
8 eI delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is fwithin my heart.”

Psalms 51:16

16 gFor you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

Isaiah 1:11-31

11 hWhat to me is the multitude of your sacrifices?
says the Lord;
I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
and the fat of well-fed beasts;
I do not delight in the blood of bulls,
or of lambs, or of goats.
12 “When you come to iappear before me,
who has required of you
this trampling of my courts?
13Bring no more vain offerings;
incense is an abomination to me.
jNew moon and Sabbath and the kcalling of convocations
I cannot endure liniquity and msolemn assembly.
14Your nnew moons and your appointed feasts
my soul hates;
they have become a burden to me;
I am weary of bearing them.
15When you ospread out your hands,
I will hide my eyes from you;
peven though you make many prayers,
I will not listen;
qyour hands are full of blood.
16 rWash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;
scease to do evil,
17learn to do good;
tseek justice,
correct oppression;
ubring justice to the fatherless,
plead the widow’s cause.
18 Come now, vlet us reason
Or dispute
together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as xwhite as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.
19 yIf you are willing and obedient,
you shall eat the good of the land;
20but if you refuse and rebel,
you shall be eaten by the sword;
zfor the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

The Unfaithful City

21 How the faithful city
aahas become a whore,
Or  become unchaste

acshe who was full of justice!
Righteousness lodged in her,
but now murderers.
22 adYour silver has become dross,
your best wine mixed with water.
23Your princes are rebels
and companions of thieves.
Everyone aeloves a bribe
and runs after gifts.
afThey do not bring justice to the fatherless,
and the widow’s cause does not come to them.
24 Therefore the agLord declares,
the Lord of hosts,
the ahMighty One of Israel:
Ah, I will get relief from my enemies
aiand avenge myself on my foes.
25 ajI will turn my hand against you
and will smelt away your akdross as with lye
and remove all your alloy.
26And I will restore your judges alas at the first,
and your counselors as at the beginning.
Afterward amyou shall be called the city of righteousness,
the faithful city.”
27 anZion shall be redeemed by justice,
and those in her who repent, by righteousness.
28 aoBut rebels and sinners shall be broken together,
and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
29 apFor they
Some Hebrew manuscripts you
shall be ashamed of arthe oaks
that you desired;
and you shall blush for asthe gardens
that you have chosen.
30For you shall be atlike an oak
whose leaf withers,
and like a garden without water.
31And the strong shall become autinder,
and his work a spark,
and both of them shall burn together,
with avnone to quench them.

Jeremiah 7:21-23

21Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: awAdd your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them axconcerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23But this command I gave them: ayObey my voice, and azI will be your God, and you shall be my people. baAnd walk in all the way that I command you, bbthat it may be well with you.’

Hosea 6:6

6For bcI desire steadfast love
Septuagint mercy
and not sacrifice,
bethe knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Hebrews 10:4-10

4For bfit is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5Consequently, bgwhen Christ
Greek he
came into the world, he said,

biSacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
but a body have you prepared for me;
6in burnt offerings and sin offerings
you have taken no pleasure.
7Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”
8When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in bjsacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), 9then he added, bkBehold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10And by that will blwe have been sanctified through the offering of bmthe body of Jesus Christ bnonce for all.
