Psalms 56

In God I Trust

To the choirmaster: according to The Dove on Far-off Terebinths. A aMiktam
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of David, when the cPhilistines seized him in Gath.

1 dBe gracious to me, O God, for man etramples on me;
all day long an attacker oppresses me;
2my enemies trample on me all day long,
for many attack me proudly.
3When I am afraid,
I fput my trust in you.
4In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; gI shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?
5 All day long they injure my cause;
Or  they twist my words

all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6They istir up strife, they jlurk;
they kwatch my steps,
as they have waited for my life.
7For their crime will they escape?
lIn wrath mcast down the peoples, O God!
8 You have kept count of my tossings;
Or wanderings

oput my tears in your bottle.
pAre they not in your book?
9Then my enemies will turn back
qin the day when I call.
This I know, that
Or because
sGod is for me.
10In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11in God I trust; tI shall not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
12 I must perform my uvows to you, O God;
I will vrender thank offerings to you.
13 wFor you have delivered my soul from death,
yes, my feet from falling,
xthat I may walk before God
yin the light of life.

Psalms 57

Let Your Glory Be over All the Earth

To the choirmaster: according to zDo Not Destroy. A aaMiktam
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of David, when he fled from Saul, in acthe cave.

1 adBe merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
for in you my soul aetakes refuge;
in afthe shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
agtill the storms of destruction pass by.
2I cry out to God Most High,
to God who ahfulfills his purpose for me.
3 aiHe will send from heaven and save me;
he will put to shame ajhim who tramples on me.  Selah
akGod will send out alhis steadfast love and his faithfulness!
4 My soul is in the midst of amlions;
I lie down amid fiery beasts—
the children of man, whose anteeth are spears and arrows,
whose aotongues are sharp swords.
5 apBe exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!
6 They set aqa net for my steps;
my soul was arbowed down.
They asdug a pit in my way,
but they have fallen into it themselves.  Selah
7 atMy heart is austeadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
8 avAwake, awmy glory!
Or  my whole being

Awake, ayO harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
9I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10For your azsteadfast love is great to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
11 baBe exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!

Psalms 58

God Who Judges the Earth

To the choirmaster: according to bbDo Not Destroy. A bcMiktam
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of David.

1 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?
Or  you mighty lords (by revocalization; Hebrew in silence)

Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
2No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
your hands bfdeal out violence on earth.
3 The wicked are bgestranged from the womb;
they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
4 bhThey have venom like the venom of a serpent,
like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
5so that it bidoes not hear the voice of charmers
or of the cunning enchanter.
6 O God, bjbreak the teeth in their mouths;
tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
7Let them bkvanish like water that runs away;
when he blaims his arrows, let them be blunted.
8Let them be like the snail bmthat dissolves into slime,
like bnthe stillborn child who never sees the sun.
9Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of bothorns,
whether green or ablaze, may he bpsweep them away!
The meaning of the Hebrew verse is uncertain

10 brThe righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance;
he will bsbathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11Mankind will say, “Surely there is bta reward for the righteous;
surely there is a God who bujudges on earth.”

Psalms 59

Deliver Me from My Enemies

To the choirmaster: according to bvDo Not Destroy. A bwMiktam
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of David, bywhen Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.

1 bzDeliver me from my enemies, O my God;
caprotect me from those who cbrise up against me;
2deliver me from ccthose who work evil,
and save me from cdbloodthirsty men.
3 For behold, they celie in wait for my life;
fierce men cfstir up strife against me.
cgFor no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
4for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
chAwake, come to meet me, and see!
5You, ciLord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
spare none of those who treacherously plot evil.  Selah
6 Each evening they cjcome back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
7There they are, ckbellowing with their mouths
with clswords in their lips
for cmWho,” they think,
Hebrew lacks  they think
“will hear us?”
8 But you, O Lord, colaugh at them;
you hold all the nations in derision.
9O my Strength, I will watch for you,
for you, O God, are cpmy fortress.
10 cqMy God in his steadfast love
Or The God who shows me steadfast love
cswill meet me;
God will let me ctlook in triumph on my enemies.
11 Kill them not, lest my people forget;
make them totter
Or wander
by your power and cvbring them down,
O Lord, our cwshield!
12For cxthe sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13 cyconsume them in wrath;
consume them till they are no more,
that they may czknow that God rules over Jacob
to dathe ends of the earth.  Selah
14 dbEach evening they come back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
15They dcwander about for food
and growl if they do not get their fill.
16 But I will sing of your strength;
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me dda fortress
and dea refuge in dfthe day of my distress.
17O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
for you, O God, dgare my fortress,
dhthe God who shows me steadfast love.
