1 eBe merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,

htill the storms of destruction pass by.

to God who ifulfills his purpose for me.
3 jHe will send from heaven and save me;
he will put to shame khim who tramples on me.  Selah
lGod will send out mhis steadfast love and his faithfulness!
4 My soul is in the midst of nlions;
I lie down amid fiery beasts—
the children of man, whose oteeth are spears and arrows,
whose ptongues are sharp swords.
5 qBe exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!
6 They set ra net for my steps;
my soul was sbowed down.
They tdug a pit in my way,
but they have fallen into it themselves.  Selah
7 uMy heart is vsteadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
8 wAwake, xmy glory!
Or  my whole being

Awake, zO harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
9I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10For your aasteadfast love is great to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
11 abBe exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!

Psalms 58

God Who Judges the Earth

To the choirmaster: according to acDo Not Destroy. A adMiktam
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of David.

1 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?
Or  you mighty lords (by revocalization; Hebrew in silence)

Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
2No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
your hands agdeal out violence on earth.
3 The wicked are ahestranged from the womb;
they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
4 aiThey have venom like the venom of a serpent,
like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
5so that it ajdoes not hear the voice of charmers
or of the cunning enchanter.
6 O God, akbreak the teeth in their mouths;
tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
7Let them alvanish like water that runs away;
when he amaims his arrows, let them be blunted.
8Let them be like the snail anthat dissolves into slime,
like aothe stillborn child who never sees the sun.
9Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of apthorns,
whether green or ablaze, may he aqsweep them away!
The meaning of the Hebrew verse is uncertain

10 asThe righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance;
he will atbathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11Mankind will say, “Surely there is aua reward for the righteous;
surely there is a God who avjudges on earth.”

Psalms 59

Deliver Me from My Enemies

To the choirmaster: according to awDo Not Destroy. A axMiktam
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of David, azwhen Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.

1 baDeliver me from my enemies, O my God;
bbprotect me from those who bcrise up against me;
2deliver me from bdthose who work evil,
and save me from bebloodthirsty men.
3 For behold, they bflie in wait for my life;
fierce men bgstir up strife against me.
bhFor no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
4for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
biAwake, come to meet me, and see!
5You, bjLord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
spare none of those who treacherously plot evil.  Selah
6 Each evening they bkcome back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
7There they are, blbellowing with their mouths
with bmswords in their lips
for bnWho,” they think,
Hebrew lacks  they think
“will hear us?”
8 But you, O Lord, bplaugh at them;
you hold all the nations in derision.
9O my Strength, I will watch for you,
for you, O God, are bqmy fortress.
10 brMy God in his steadfast love
Or The God who shows me steadfast love
btwill meet me;
God will let me bulook in triumph on my enemies.
11 Kill them not, lest my people forget;
make them totter
Or wander
by your power and bwbring them down,
O Lord, our bxshield!
12For bythe sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13 bzconsume them in wrath;
consume them till they are no more,
that they may caknow that God rules over Jacob
to cbthe ends of the earth.  Selah
14 ccEach evening they come back,
howling like dogs
and prowling about the city.
15They cdwander about for food
and growl if they do not get their fill.
16 But I will sing of your strength;
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me cea fortress
and cfa refuge in cgthe day of my distress.
17O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
for you, O God, chare my fortress,
cithe God who shows me steadfast love.
