Ecclesiastes 1:17-18

Ecclesiastes 2:3-11

3 I ^ksearched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my heart still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on ^lfolly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. 4 I made great works. 9 So I became great and ^xsurpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my ^ywisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart ^zfound pleasure in all my toil, and this was my ^aareward for all my toil. 11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was ^abvanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing ^acto be gained under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 3:19

Evil Under the Sun

On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them. 2 And I ^ajthought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive. 3 But ^akbetter than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is ^alvanity ^{▼▼The Hebrew term hebel can refer to a “vapor” or “mere breath”; also verses 7, 8, 16 (see note on 1:2)} and a striving after wind.

Ecclesiastes 4:8

8 one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his ^aneyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, ^ao“For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy ^apbusiness.

Ecclesiastes 4:16

16 There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is ^aqvanity and a striving after wind.
