Psalms 80:8-19

8 You brought aa vine out of Egypt;
you bdrove out the nations and planted it.
9You ccleared the ground for it;
it took deep root and filled the land.
10The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11It sent out its branches to dthe sea
and its shoots to ethe River.
That is,  the Euphrates

12Why then have you gbroken down its walls,
so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
13 hThe boar from the forest ravages it,
and all that move in the field feed on it.
14 Turn again, O God of hosts!
iLook down from heaven, and see;
have regard for this vine,
15the stock that your right hand planted,
and for the son whom you made strong for yourself.
16They have jburned it with fire; they have kcut it down;
may they perish at lthe rebuke of your face!
17But mlet your hand be on the man of your right hand,
the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!
18Then we shall not turn back from you;
ngive us life, and we will call upon your name!
19 oRestore us, O Lord God of hosts!
Let your face shine, that we may be saved!

Jeremiah 2:21

21 pYet I planted you a choice vine,
wholly of pure seed.
qHow then have you turned degenerate
and become a wild vine?

Matthew 21:33-46

The Parable of the Tenants

33 rHear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted sa vineyard tand put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and uleased it to tenants, and vwent into another country. 34When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants
Greek bondservants; also verses 35, 36
to the tenants xto get his fruit.
35 yAnd the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and zstoned another. 36 aaAgain he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, abThis is the heir. Come, aclet us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39And they took him and adthrew him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 aeWhen therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41They said to him, af“He will put those wretches to a miserable death and aglet out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

42Jesus said to them, ah“Have you never read in the Scriptures:

ai“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
Greek  the head of the corner

this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God akwill be taken away from you and given to a people alproducing its fruits. 44And amthe one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and anwhen it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”
Some manuscripts omit verse 44

45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46And apalthough they were seeking to arrest him, aqthey feared the crowds, because they held him to be ara prophet.

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

9 asAnd he began to tell the people this parable: A man planted ata vineyard and aulet it out to tenants and avwent into another country for a long while. 10When the time came, he sent a servant
Greek bondservant; also verse 11
to the tenants, so that axthey would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. ayBut the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
11 azAnd bahe sent another servant. But they also beat and bbtreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 bcAnd he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my bdbeloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, beThis is the heir. bfLet us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15And they bgthrew him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 bhHe will bicome and destroy those tenants and bjgive the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17But he bklooked directly at them and said, What then is this that is written:

bl“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone’?
Greek  the head of the corner

18 bnEveryone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls boon anyone, it will crush him.”
