Psalms 83:5-15

5For they conspire with one accord;
against you they make a covenant
6the tents of aEdom and bthe Ishmaelites,
cMoab and dthe Hagrites,
7 eGebal and fAmmon and gAmalek,
hPhilistia with the inhabitants of iTyre;
8 jAsshur also has joined them;
they are the strong arm of kthe children of Lot.  Selah
9 Do to them as you did to lMidian,
as to mSisera and Jabin at nthe river Kishon,
10who were destroyed at oEn-dor,
who became pdung for the ground.
11Make their nobles like qOreb and Zeeb,
all their princes like rZebah and Zalmunna,
12who said, s“Let us take possession for ourselves
of the pastures of God.”
13 O my God, make them like twhirling dust,
Or  like a tumbleweed

like vchaff before the wind.
14As wfire consumes the forest,
as the flame xsets the mountains ablaze,
15so may you pursue them ywith your tempest
and terrify them with your hurricane!

Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

1 Draw near, zO nations, to hear,
and give attention, O peoples!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it;
the world, and all that comes from it.
2For the Lord is enraged against all the nations,
and furious against all their host;
he has aadevoted them to destruction,
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verse 5
has given them over for slaughter.
3Their slain shall be cast out,
and acthe stench of their corpses shall rise;
adthe mountains shall flow with their blood.
4 aeAll the host of heaven shall rot away,
and the skies roll up like a scroll.
All their host shall fall,
as leaves fall from the vine,
like leaves falling from the fig tree.
5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon afEdom,
upon the people agI have devoted to destruction.
6The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
ahFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 aiWild oxen shall ajfall with them,
and akyoung steers with althe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 amFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 anAnd the streams of Edom
Hebrew her streams
shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10Night and day apit shall not be quenched;
aqits smoke shall go up forever.
arFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 asBut the hawk and the porcupine
The identity of the animals rendered  hawk and  porcupine is uncertain
shall possess it,
the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
auHe shall stretch the line of avconfusion
Hebrew formlessness
over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 axThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of ayjackals,
an abode for ostriches.
Or owls

14 baAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird
Identity uncertain
settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there bcthe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 bdHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from beEdom,
in crimsoned garments from bfBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
bgmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your bhapparel red,
and your garments like his biwho treads in the winepress?
3 bj“I have trodden the winepress alone,
bkand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 bmFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but bothere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
bpI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning bqEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

br“Is wisdom no more in bsTeman?
btHas counsel perished from the prudent?
buHas their wisdom vanished?
8 bvFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of bwDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
bxthe time when I punish him.
9 byIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave bzgleanings?
caIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 cbBut I have stripped Esau bare;
ccI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and cdhe is no more.
11 ceLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
cfand let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: cgIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, chwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 ciFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that cjBozrah shall become cka horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 clI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
cm“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you comake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 cpEdom shall become a horror. cqEveryone who passes by it will be horrified crand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 csAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their ctneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, cuno man shall dwell there, cvno man shall sojourn in her. 19 cwBehold, cxlike a lion coming up from cythe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. daFor who is like me? dbWho will summon me? dcWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against ddEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of deTeman: dfEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall dgthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, dhone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against diBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart djof a woman in her birth pains.”

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12Thus says the Lord God: Because dkEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended dlin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, dmI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from dnTeman even to doDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom dpby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and dqthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 drSon of man, dsset your face dtagainst duMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: dvBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and dwI will stretch out my hand against you, dxand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 dyI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5Because dzyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword eaat the time of their calamity, ebat the time of their final punishment, 6therefore, ecas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; edbecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 eeI will make Mount Seir a waste efand a desolation, and I will cut off from it egall who come and go. 8And I will fill ehits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all eiyour ravines ejthose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 ekI will make you a perpetual desolation, and elyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then emyou will know that I am the Lord.

10Because you said, en‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and eowe will take possession of them’—although the epLord was there 11therefore, eqas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you eraccording to the anger and esenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And etI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12And you shall know that I am the Lord.

eu“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; evthey are given us to devour.’
13And ewyou magnified yourselves against me exwith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14Thus says the Lord God: eyWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15As you ezrejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, faMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then fbthey will know that I am the Lord.
