Psalms 88

I Cry Out Day and Night Before You

A Song. A Psalm of athe Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to bMahalath Leannoth. A Maskil
Probably musical or liturgical terms
of dHeman the Ezrahite.

1 O Lord, eGod of my salvation,
I fcry out day and night before you.
2Let my prayer come before you;
gincline your ear to my cry!
3 For my soul is full of troubles,
and hmy life draws near to iSheol.
4I am counted among those who jgo down to the pit;
I am a man who has no strength,
5like one set loose among the dead,
like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom kyou remember no more,
for they are lcut off from your hand.
6You have put me in mthe depths of the pit,
in the nregions dark and odeep.
7Your wrath plies heavy upon me,
and you overwhelm me with qall your waves.  Selah
8 You have caused rmy companions to shun me;
you have made me sa horror
Or an abomination
to them.
I am ushut in so that I cannot escape;
9 vmy eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon you, O Lord;
I wspread out my hands to you.
10Do you work wonders for the dead?
xDo the departed rise up to praise you?  Selah
11Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12Are your ywonders known in zthe darkness,
or your righteousness in the land of aaforgetfulness?
13 But I, O Lord, cry abto you;
acin the morning my prayer comes before you.
14O Lord, why addo you cast my soul away?
Why aedo you hide your face from me?
15Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain

16Your wrath has swept over me;
your agdreadful assaults destroy me.
17They ahsurround me like a flood aiall day long;
they ajclose in on me together.
18You have caused akmy beloved and my friend to shun me;
my companions have become darkness.
Or darkness has become my only companion

Psalms 89

I Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord

A Maskil
Probably a musical or liturgical term
of anEthan the Ezrahite.

1 aoI will sing of apthe steadfast love of the Lord, forever;
with my mouth I will make known your aqfaithfulness to all generations.
2For I said, ar“Steadfast love will be built up forever;
in the heavens asyou will establish your atfaithfulness.”
3You have said, “I have made aua covenant with my avchosen one;
I have awsworn to David my servant:
4‘I will establish your axoffspring forever,
and build your aythrone for all generations.’”  Selah
5 Let azthe heavens praise your bawonders, O Lord,
your faithfulness in the assembly of bbthe holy ones!
6For bcwho in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
bdWho among the heavenly beings
Hebrew  the sons of God, or  the sons of might
is like the Lord,
7a God greatly bfto be feared in the council of bgthe holy ones,
and awesome above all bhwho are around him?
8O Lord God of hosts,
biwho is mighty as you are, O bjLord,
with your faithfulness all around you?
9You rule the raging of the sea;
when its waves rise, you bkstill them.
10You blcrushed bmRahab like a carcass;
you bnscattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
11 boThe heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
bpthe world and all that is in it, you have bqfounded them.
12 brThe north and the south, you have created them;
bsTabor and btHermon bujoyously praise your name.
13You have a mighty arm;
strong is your hand, high your right hand.
14 bvRighteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
bwsteadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
15Blessed are the people who know bxthe festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in bythe light of your face,
16who exult in your bzname all the day
and in your righteousness are caexalted.
17For you are cbthe glory of their strength;
by your favor our cchorn is exalted.
18For our cdshield belongs to the Lord,
our king to cethe Holy One of Israel.
19 cfOf old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,
Some Hebrew manuscripts  godly ones
and said:
“I have chgranted help to one who is cimighty;
I have exalted one cjchosen from the people.
20 ckI have found David, my servant;
with my holy oil I have clanointed him,
21so that my cmhand shall be established with him;
my arm also shall strengthen him.
22The enemy shall not outwit him;
cnthe wicked shall not humble him.
23I will cocrush his foes before him
and strike down those who hate him.
24My cpfaithfulness and my cqsteadfast love shall be with him,
and in my name shall his crhorn be exalted.
25I will set his hand on csthe sea
and his right hand on ctthe rivers.
26He shall cry to me, ‘You are my cuFather,
my God, and cvthe Rock of my salvation.’
27And I will make him the cwfirstborn,
cxthe highest of the kings of the earth.
28My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,
and my cycovenant will stand firm
Or  will remain faithful
for him.
29I will establish his daoffspring forever
and his dbthrone as dcthe days of the heavens.
30 ddIf his children forsake my law
and do not walk according to my rules,
Or  my just decrees

31if they violate my statutes
and do not keep my commandments,
32then I will punish their transgression with dfthe rod
and their iniquity with stripes,
33but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
or be false to my faithfulness.
34I will not violate my dgcovenant
or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
35Once for all I have sworn dhby my holiness;
I will not dilie to David.
36His djoffspring shall endure forever,
dkhis dlthrone as long as dmthe sun before me.
37Like dnthe moon it shall be established forever,
doa faithful witness in the skies.”  Selah
38 But now you have dpcast off and rejected;
you are full of wrath against your dqanointed.
39You have drrenounced dsthe covenant with your servant;
you have dtdefiled his ducrown in the dust.
40You have dvbreached all his walls;
you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
41 dwAll who pass by plunder him;
he has become dxthe scorn of his neighbors.
42You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you have made all his enemies rejoice.
43You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
and you have not made him stand in battle.
44You have made his splendor to cease
and cast his throne to the ground.
45You have cut short dythe days of his youth;
you have dzcovered him with shame.  Selah
46 eaHow long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
How long will your wrath ebburn like fire?
47 ecRemember edhow short my eetime is!
For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
48 efWhat man can live and never egsee death?
Who can deliver his soul from the power of ehSheol?  Selah
49 Lord, where is your eisteadfast love of old,
which by your ejfaithfulness you swore to David?
50 ekRemember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
and how I bear in my elheart the insults
Hebrew lacks  the insults
of all the many nations,
51with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
with which they mock enthe footsteps of your eoanointed.
52 epBlessed be the Lord forever!

Amen and Amen.
