Romans 3:4

4By no means! aLet God be true though bevery one were a liar, as it is written,

cThat you may be justified in your words,
and prevail when you dare judged.”

Romans 3:10-19

10as it is written:

e“None is righteous, no, not one;
11no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
12All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
13 fTheir throat is gan open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
h“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
14 iTheir mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 jTheir feet are swift to shed blood;
16in their paths are ruin and misery,
17and kthe way of peace they have not known.”
18 l“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19Now we know that whatever mthe law says it speaks to those who are under the law, nso that every mouth may be stopped, and othe whole world may be held accountable to God.

Romans 4:3-17

3For what does the Scripture say? pAbraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” 4Now qto the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5And to the one who does not work but rbelieves in
Or  but trusts; compare verse 24
him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,
6just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

7 tBlessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;
8blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not ucount his sin.”
9Is this blessing then only for vthe circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? wFor we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 xHe received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was yto make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

The Promise Realized Through Faith

13For zthe promise to Abraham and his offspring aathat he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 abFor if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15For acthe law brings wrath, but adwhere there is no law aethere is no transgression.

16That is why it depends on faith, afin order that the promise may rest on grace and agbe guaranteed to all his offspringnot only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, ahwho is the father of us all, 17as it is written, ai“I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, ajwho gives life to the dead and calls into existence akthe things that do not exist.

Romans 5:12-14

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12Therefore, just as alsin came into the world through one man, and amdeath through sin, and anso death spread to all men
The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women; also twice in verse 18
because apall sinned
13for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but aqsin is not counted where there is no law. 14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not arlike the transgression of Adam, aswho was a type of atthe one who was to come.

Romans 9:7

7and not all are children of Abraham aubecause they are his offspring, but avThrough Isaac shall your offspring be named.”

Romans 9:9

9For this is what the promise said: awAbout this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Romans 9:12-13

12she was told, ax“The older will serve the younger.” 13As it is written, ayJacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

Romans 9:15

15For he says to Moses, az“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

Romans 9:17

17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, baFor this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”
