O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? ^aIt was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly ^bportrayed as crucified.

Ὦ ἀνόητοι Γαλάται, τίς ὑμᾶς ἐβάσκανεν, οἷς κατ᾽ ὀφθαλμοὺς Ἰησοῦς χριστὸς προεγράφη ἐσταυρωμένος;

Let me ask you only this: ^cDid you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by ^dhearing with faith?

τοῦτο μόνον θέλω μαθεῖν ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν· ἐξ ἔργων νόμου τὸ πνεῦμα ἐλάβετε ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;

Are you so foolish? ^eHaving begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by ▼

▼Or  now ending with

the flesh?

οὕτως ἀνόητοί ἐστε; ἐναρξάμενοι πνεύματι νῦν σαρκὶ ἐπιτελεῖσθε;

^gDid you suffer ▼

▼Or experience

so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?

τοσαῦτα ἐπάθετε εἰκῆ; εἴ γε καὶ εἰκῆ.

Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and ⁱworks miracles among you do so ^jby works of the law, or by hearing with faith—

Ὁ οὖν ἐπιχορηγῶν ὑμῖν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἐνεργῶν δυνάμεις ἐν ὑμῖν, ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;

just as ^kAbraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

καθὼς Ἁβραὰμ ἐπίστευσεν τῷ θεῷ καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην.

Know then that it is ^lthose of faith who are ^mthe sons of Abraham.

γινώσκετε ἄρα ὅτι οἱ ἐκ πίστεως οὗτοι υἱοί εἰσιν Ἁβραάμ.

And the Scripture, foreseeing that ⁿGod would justify ▼

▼Or count righteous; also verses 11, 24

the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ^p“In you shall all the nations be blessed.”

προϊδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γραφὴ ὅτι ἐκ πίστεως δικαιοῖ τὰ ἔθνη ὁ θεός, προευηγγελίσατο τῷ Ἁβραὰμ ὅτι ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν σοὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη.

So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

ὥστε οἱ ἐκ πίστεως εὐλογοῦνται σὺν τῷ πιστῷ Ἁβραάμ.

For all who rely on works of the law are ^qunder a curse; for it is written, ^r“Cursed be everyone who does not ^sabide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”

ὅσοι γὰρ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου εἰσίν, ὑπὸ κατάραν εἰσίν· γέγραπται γὰρ ὅτι ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὃς οὐκ ἐμμένει πᾶσιν τοῖς γεγραμμένοις ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτά.

Now it is evident that ^tno one is justified before God by the law, for ^u“The righteous shall live by faith.” ▼

▼Or The one who by faith is righteous will live

ὅτι δὲ ἐν νόμῳ οὐδεὶς δικαιοῦται παρὰ τῷ θεῷ δῆλον, ὅτι ὁ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται·

But the law is not of faith, rather ^w“The one who does them shall live by them.”

ὁ δὲ νόμος οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ πίστεως ἀλλὰ ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς.

Christ ^xredeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ^y“Cursed is everyone who is hanged ^zon a tree”—

Χριστὸς ἡμᾶς ἐξηγόρασεν ἐκ τῆς κατάρας τοῦ νόμου γενόμενος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν κατάρα· ὅτι γέγραπται· ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὁ κρεμάμενος ἐπὶ ξύλου·

so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might ^aacome to the Gentiles, so that ^abwe might receive ^acthe promised Spirit ▼

▼Greek  receive the promise of the Spirit

through faith.

ἵνα εἰς τὰ ἔθνη ἡ εὐλογία τοῦ Ἁβραὰμ γένηται ἐν χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ἵνα τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πνεύματος λάβωμεν διὰ τῆς πίστεως.

^aeTo give a human example, brothers: ▼

▼Or  brothers and sisters

^ageven with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.

ἀδελφοί, κατὰ ἄνθρωπον λέγω. ὅμως ἀνθρώπου κεκυρωμένην διαθήκην οὐδεὶς ἀθετεῖ ἢ ἐπιδιατάσσεται.

Now ^ahthe promises were made ^aito Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, ^aj“And to your offspring,” who is Christ.

τῷ δὲ Ἁβραὰμ ἐρρέθησαν αἱ ἐπαγγελίαι καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ. οὐ λέγει· καὶ τοῖς σπέρμασιν ὡς ἐπὶ πολλῶν ἀλλ᾽ ὡς ἐφ᾽ ἑνός· καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου ὅς ἐστιν χριστός.

This is what I mean: the law, which came ^ak430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as ^alto make the promise void.

τοῦτο δὲ λέγω· διαθήκην προκεκυρωμένην ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ὁ μετὰ τετρακόσια καὶ τριάκοντα ἔτη γεγονὼς νόμος οὐκ ἀκυροῖ εἰς τὸ καταργῆσαι τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν.

For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but ^amGod gave it to Abraham by a promise.

εἰ γὰρ ἐκ νόμου ἡ κληρονομία οὐκέτι ἐξ ἐπαγγελίας· τῷ δὲ Ἁβραὰμ δι᾽ ἐπαγγελίας κεχάρισται ὁ θεός.

Why then the law? ^anIt was added because of transgressions, ^aountil the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was ^apput in place through angels ^aqby an intermediary.

Τί οὖν ὁ νόμος; τῶν παραβάσεων χάριν προσετέθη ἄχρις οὗ ἔλθῃ τὸ σπέρμα ᾧ ἐπήγγελται, διαταγεὶς δι᾽ ἀγγέλων ἐν χειρὶ μεσίτου.

Now ^aran intermediary implies more than one, but ^asGod is one.

ὁ δὲ μεσίτης ἑνὸς οὐκ ἔστιν, ὁ δὲ θεὸς εἷς ἐστιν.

Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For ^atif a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.

Ὁ οὖν νόμος κατὰ τῶν ἐπαγγελιῶν τοῦ θεοῦ; μὴ γένοιτο. εἰ γὰρ ἐδόθη νόμος ὁ δυνάμενος ζωοποιῆσαι, ὄντως ἐκ νόμου ἂν ἦν ἡ δικαιοσύνη·

But the Scripture ^auimprisoned everything under sin, so that ^avthe promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given ^awto those who believe.

ἀλλὰ συνέκλεισεν ἡ γραφὴ τὰ πάντα ὑπὸ ἁμαρτίαν, ἵνα ἡ ἐπαγγελία ἐκ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ δοθῇ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν.

Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, ^aximprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.

Πρὸ τοῦ δὲ ἐλθεῖν τὴν πίστιν ὑπὸ νόμον ἐφρουρούμεθα συνκλειόμενοι εἰς τὴν μέλλουσαν πίστιν ἀποκαλυφθῆναι.

So then, ^aythe law was our ^azguardian until Christ came, ^bain order that we might be justified by faith.

ὥστε ὁ νόμος παιδαγωγὸς ἡμῶν γέγονεν εἰς χριστόν, ἵνα ἐκ πίστεως δικαιωθῶμεν·

But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian,

ἐλθούσης δὲ τῆς πίστεως οὐκέτι ὑπὸ παιδαγωγόν ἐσμεν.

for in Christ Jesus ^bbyou are all sons of God, through faith.

πάντες γὰρ υἱοὶ θεοῦ ἐστὲ διὰ τῆς πίστεως ἐν χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ·

For as many of you as ^bcwere baptized ^bdinto Christ have ^beput on Christ.

ὅσοι γὰρ εἰς χριστὸν ἐβαπτίσθητε, χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε.

^bfThere is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave ▼

▼Greek bondservant

nor free, ^bhthere is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

οὐκ ἔνι Ἰουδαῖος οὐδὲ Ἕλλην, οὐκ ἔνι δοῦλος οὐδὲ ἐλεύθερος, οὐκ ἔνι ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ· πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς εἷς ἐστὲ ἐν χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.

And ^biif you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, ^bjheirs according to promise.

εἰ δὲ ὑμεῖς χριστοῦ, ἄρα τοῦ Ἁβραὰμ σπέρμα ἐστέ, κατ᾽ ἐπαγγελίαν κληρονόμοι.
