אֶת־אֵלֶּה דִּבַּרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם לְמַעַן לֹא תִכָּשֵׁלוּ׃
“ aThese things I have spoken to you so that you will not ▼▼Or
let yourselves be led; or
fall away (in apostasy)
be cled into sin.

הִנֵּה יְנַדּוּ אֶתְכֶם וְאַף בָּאָה הַשָּׁעָה אֲשֶׁר כָּל־הֹרֵג אֶתְכֶם יְדַמֶּה לְהַקְרִיב עֲבוֹדָה לֵאלֹהִים׃
They will ▼ eban you from the synagogue, yet fan hour is coming for everyone gwho kills you to think that he is offering a ▼▼I.e., as an act of worship
service to God.

וְכָזֹאת יַעֲשֹוּ לָכֶם יַעַן גַּם־אֶת־אָבִי וְגַם־אֹתִי לֹא יָדָעוּ׃
These things they will do ibecause they have not known the Father nor Me.

אֲבָל הִגַּדְתִּי לָכֶם אֶת־אֵלֶּה לְמַעַן אֲשֶׁר־בְּבֹא הַשָּׁעָה תִּזְכְּרוּם כִּי אָנֹכִי אָמַרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם וְכָאֵלֶּה לֹא־אָמַרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם מֵרֹאשׁ כִּי הָיִיתִי עִמָּכֶם׃
But these things I have spoken to you, jso that when their hour comes, you ▼▼Or
will remember them, that I told you may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you lat the beginning, because I was with you.

וְעַתָּה הֹלֵךְ אָנֹכִי אֶל־שֹׁלְחִי וְלֹא יִשְׁאָלֵנִי אִישׁ מִכֶּם אָנָה תֵלֵךְ׃
“But now mI am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘ nWhere are You going?’

אַךְ עַל־דַּבְּרִי אֶת־אֵלֶּה אֲלֵיכֶם מָלֵא לְבַבְכֶם עַצָּבֶת׃
But because I have said these things to you, ogrief has filled your heart.

Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor qHelper will not come to you; but if I go, rI will send Him to you.

vand regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

עוֹד רַבּוֹת לִי לְהַגִּיד לָכֶם אַךְ לֹא־תוּכְלוּן שְׂאֵת עָתָּה׃
“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time.

וְרוּחַ הָאֱמֶת בְּבֹאוֹ הוּא יַדְרִיךְ אֶתְכֶם אֶל־כָּל־הָאֱמֶת כִּי לֹא יְדַבֵּר מֵעַצְמוֹ כִּי אִם־אֲשֶׁר יִשְׁמַע יְדַבֵּר וְהַבָּאוֹת יַגִּיד לָכֶם׃
But when He, wthe Spirit of truth, comes, He will xguide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

הוּא יְפָאֲרֵנִי כִּי מִשֶּׁלִּי יִקַּח וְיַגִּיד לָכֶם׃
He will yglorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you.

“Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’?

Truly, truly I say to you that agyou will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but ahyour grief will be turned into joy!

הָאִשָּׁה בְּלִדְתָּהּ עֶצֶב לָהּ כִּי בָאָה עִתָּהּ וְאַחֲרֵי יָלְדָה אֶת־הַיֶּלֶד לֹא־תִזְכֹּר עוֹד אֶת־עִצְּבוֹנָהּ מִשִּׂמְחָתָהּ כִּי־אָדָם נוֹלַד לָעוֹלָם׃
aiWhenever a woman is in labor she has ▼pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a ▼child has been born into the world.

וְגַם־אַתֶּם כָּעֵת תִּתְעַצָּבוּ אַךְ אָשׁוּב אֶרְאֶה אֶתְכֶם וְשָׂשׂ לִבְּכֶם וְאֵין־לֹקֵחַ שִׂמְחַתְכֶם מִכֶּם׃
Therefore alyou too have grief now; but amI will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.

These things I have spoken to you so that bjin Me you may have peace. bkIn the world you have tribulation, but bltake courage; bmI have overcome the world.”
