וַיְהִי אִישׁ אֶחָד בְּתוֹךְ הַפְּרוּשִׁים וּשְׁמוֹ נַקְדִּימוֹן שַׂר לַיְּהוּדִים׃
Now there was a
man of the
Pharisees,
named aNicodemus, a
bruler of the
Jews;

וַיָּבֹא אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ לַיְלָה וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו רַבִּי יָדַעְנוּ כִּי אַתָּה מוֹרֶה מֵאֵת אֱלֹהִים בָּאתָ כִּי לֹא־יוּכַל אִישׁ לַעֲשׂוֹת הָאֹתוֹת אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה עֹשֶׂה בִּלְתִּי אִם־הָאֱלֹהִים עִמּוֹ׃
this man came to
▼Jesus at
night and
said to Him, “
dRabbi, we
know that You have
come from
God as a
teacher; for
no one can do these ▼▼I.e., confirming miracles
fsigns that You
do unless gGod is with him.”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָךְ אִם־לֹא יִוָּלֵד אִישׁ מִלְמַעְלָה לֹא־יוּכַל לִרְאוֹת מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים׃
Jesus responded and
said to him,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone his born ▼again he cannot see jthe kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus *said to Him, “
How can a
person be
born when he is
old? He
cannot enter his
mother’s womb a
second time and be
born, can he?”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָךְ אִם־לֹא יִוָּלֵד אִישׁ מִן־הַמַּיִם וְהָרוּחַ לֹא־יוּכַל לָבוֹא אֶל־מַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים׃
Jesus answered,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of kwater and the Spirit, he cannot enter lthe kingdom of God.

mThat which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit.

אַל־תִּתְמַהּ עַל־אָמְרִי לָךְ כִּי עֲלֵיכֶם לְהִוָּלֵד מִלְמָעְלָה׃
Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born ▼again.’

הָרוּחַ בַּאֲשֶׁר יַחְפֹּץ שָׁם הוּא נשֵׁב וְאַתָּה תִּשְׁמַע אֶת־קוֹלוֹ אַךְ לֹא תֵדַע מֵאַיִן בָּא וְאָנָה הוּא הוֹלֵךְ כֵּן כָּל־הַנּוֹלָד מִן־הָרוּחַ׃
oThe wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

וַיַּעַן נַקְדִּימוֹן וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֵיכָה תִהְיֶה כָּזֹאת׃
Nicodemus responded and
said to Him, “
How can these things be?”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו רַבָּן שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל אַתָּה וְזֹאת לֹא יָדָעְתָּ׃

“You are pthe teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָךְ כִּי אֵת אֲשֶׁר־יָדַעְנוּ נְדַבֵּר וְאֵת אֲשֶׁר־רָאִינוּ נָעִיד וְאַתֶּם לֹא תְקַבְּלוּ עֵדוּתֵנוּ׃
Truly, truly, I say to you, qwe speak of what we know and rtestify of what we have seen, and syou people do not accept our testimony.

אִם־אָמַרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם דִּבְרֵי הָאָרֶץ וְאֵינְכֶם מַאֲמִינִים אֵיךְ תַּאֲמִינוּ בְּאָמְרִי אֲלֵיכֶם דִּבְרֵי הַשָּׁמָיִם׃
If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

וְאִישׁ לֹא־עָלָה הַשָּׁמַיְמָה בִּלְתִּי אִם־אֲשֶׁר יָרַד מִן־הַשָּׁמָיִם בֶּן־הָאָדָם אֲשֶׁר הוּא בַּשָּׁמָיִם׃
tNo one has ascended into heaven, except uHe who descended from heaven: vthe Son of Man.

וְכַאֲשֶׁר הִגְבִּיהַּ משֶׁה אֶת־הַנָּחָשׁ בַּמִּדְבָּר כֵּן צָרִיךְ בֶּן־הָאָדָם לְהִנָּשֵׂא׃
And just as wMoses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must xthe Son of Man ybe lifted up,

לְמַעַן לֹא יֹאבַד כָּל־הַמַּאֲמִין בּוֹ כִּי אִם־יִחְיֶה חַיֵּי עוֹלָמִים׃
