וַיְהִי בְּעָבְרוֹ וַיַּרְא אִישׁ וְהוּא עִוֵּר מִיּוֹם הִוָּלְדוֹ׃
As
Jesus passed by, He
saw a
man who had been blind from
birth.

וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ אֹתוֹ תַּלְמִידָיו לֵאמֹר רַבִּי מִי־הוּא אֲשֶׁר חָטָא הֲזֶה אִם־יֹלְדָיו כִּי נוֹלַד עִוֵּר׃
And His
disciples asked Him, “
aRabbi,
who sinned,
bthis man or his
cparents, that he would be
born blind?”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ לֹא זֶה חָטָא וְלֹא יוֹלְדָיו אַךְ לְמַעַן יִגָּלוּ־בוֹ מַעַלְלֵי־אֵל׃
Jesus answered,
“It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was dso that the works of God might be displayed in him.

עָלַי לַעֲשֹוֹת מַעֲשֵׂי שֹׁלְחִי בְּעוֹד יוֹם יָבוֹא הַלַּיְלָה אֲשֶׁר־בּוֹ לֹא־יוּכַל אִישׁ לִפְעֹל׃
We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me eas long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.

When He had
said this, He
gspit on the
ground, and
made mud from the
saliva, and
applied the
mud to his
eyes,

וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו לֵךְ וּרְחַץ בִּבְרֵכַת הַשִּׁלֹּחַ פֵּרוּשׁוֹ שָׁלוּחַ וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיִּרְחַץ וַיָּבֹא וְעֵינָיו רֹאוֹת׃
and
said to him,
“Go, wash in hthe pool of Siloam” (which is
translated,
Sent).
So he
left and
iwashed, and
jcame back seeing.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ שְׁכֵנָיו וַאֲשֶׁר רָאוּ אֹתוֹ לְפָנִים כִּי־עִוֵּר הוּא הֲלֹא־זֶה הוּא הַיּשֵׁב וּמְשָׁאֵל׃
So the
neighbors, and
those who
previously saw ▼him as a
beggar, were
saying, “Is
this not the one who used to
lsit and
beg?”

אֵלֶּה אָמְרוּ כִּי־הוּא זֶה וְאֵלֶּה אָמְרוּ אַךְ־דּוֹמֶה לּוֹ וְהוּא אָמַר אֲנִי הוּא׃
Others were
saying, “
This is he,”
still others were
saying, “
No, but he is
like him.”
▼The man himself kept
saying, “I
am the one.”

So they were
saying to him, “
How then were your
eyes opened?”

He
answered, “The
man who is
called Jesus made mud, and
spread it on my
eyes, and
said to me,
‘Go to nSiloam and wash’;
so I
went away and
washed, and I
received sight.”

And they
said to him, “
Where is He?” He *

mud and
opened his
eyes.

This man is not from
God,

keep the
Sabbath.” But
others were
saying, “
How can a
man who is a

dissension among them.

man who was blind, “
What do you
say about Him,
since He
opened your
eyes?” And he
said, “He is a
wprophet.”

son, and that he was
born blind;

but
how he
now sees, we do not
know;
or who opened his
eyes, we do not

Ask him; he is of

כָּזֹאת דִּבְּרוּ יוֹלְדָיו מִיִּרְאָתָם אֶת־הַיְּהוּדִים כִּי הַיְּהוּדִים כְּבָר נוֹעֲצוּ לְנַדּוֹת אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר יוֹדֶה כִּי הוּא הַמָּשִׁיחַ׃
His
parents said this because they
ywere afraid of the
▼▼I.e., the Jewish leaders
Jews; for the
Jews aahad
already reached the decision that
if anyone confessed Him to be
▼Christ,
ache was to be
excommunicated from the synagogue.

this reason that his
parents said, “

age;

So for a
second time they
summoned the
man who had
been blind, and
said to him, “
aeGive glory to
God; we
know that
afthis man is a
sinner.”

He
answered them, “
agI
told you
already and you did not
ahlisten;
why do you
want to
hear it again? You do not
want to
become His
disciples too, do you?”

וַיְחָרְפוּ אֹתוֹ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַתָּה תַלְמִידוֹ וַאֲנַחְנוּ תַּלְמִידָיו שֶׁל־משֶׁה׃
They
spoke abusively to him and
said, “You are His
disciple, but
aiwe are
disciples of
Moses.

אֲנַחְנוּ יוֹדְעִים כִּי אֶל־משֶׁה דִּבֶּר הָאֱלֹהִים וְאֶת־זֶה לֹא יָדַעְנוּ מֵאַיִן הוּא׃
We
know that
God has
spoken to
Moses, but as for
this man,
ajwe do not
know where He is from.”

The
man answered and
said to them, “
Well,
here is the
amazing thing, that you do not
know where He is from, and
yet He
opened my
eyes!

וְהִנֵּה יָדַעְנוּ כִּי אֶת־הַחַטָּאִים לֹא־יִשְׁמַע אֵל כִּי אִם־אֶת־יְרֵא הָאֱלֹהִים וְעֹשֵׂה רְצוֹנוֹ אֹתוֹ יִשְׁמָע׃
We
know that
akGod does not
listen to
sinners; but
if someone is
▼God-fearing and
does His
will, He
listens to him.
