rIn the
days of
Herod,
king of
Judea, there was a
priest named Zechariah, of the
sdivision of
▼Abijah; and he had a
wife ▼▼I.e., of priestly descent
from the
daughters of
Aaron, and her
name was
Elizabeth.

priestly office, he was
chosen by lot zto
enter the
temple of the
Lord and
burn incense.

Zechariah was
troubled when he
saw the angel, and

But the
angel said to him, “

be afraid,
Zechariah, for your
prayer has been
heard, and your
wife Elizabeth will
bear you a
son, and
afyou shall
▼name him
John.

disobedient to the
attitude of the
righteous, to
anmake ready a
people prepared for the
Lord.”

angel, “
How will I
know this? For

am an
old man, and my
wife is
advanced in her

meanwhile the
people were
waiting for Zechariah, and
were wondering at his
delay in the

But when he
came out, he was
unable to
speak to them; and they
realized that he had
seen a
vision in the
temple, and he

neighbors and her
relatives heard that the
Lord had

visited us and
accomplished dlredemption for His

וַיָּרֶם לָנוּ קֶרֶן יְשׁוּעָה בְּבֵית דָּוִד עַבְדּוֹ׃

raised up a
dmhorn of
salvation for us

house of

כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר בְּפִי־נְבִיאָיו הַקְּדוֹשִׁים אֲשֶׁר מֵעוֹלָם׃
doJust as He
spoke by the
mouth of His
holy prophets dpfrom
ancient times--

יְשׁוּעָה מֵאֹיְבֵינוּ וּמִיַּד כָּל־שׂנְאֵינוּ׃
▼ drSalvation dsfrom our
enemies,
And from the
hand of
all who
hate us;

לַעֲשׂוֹת חֶסֶד עִם־אֲבוֹתֵינוּ וְלִזְכֹּר אֶת־בְּרִית קָדְשׁוֹ׃
dtTo
show mercy to our
fathers,
duAnd to
remember His
holy covenant,

אֶת־הַשְּׁבוּעָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לְאַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ׃
dv The oath which He
swore to our
father Abraham,

לְהַצִּילֵנוּ מִיַּד אֹיְבֵינוּ וּלְתִתֵּנוּ לְעָבְדוֹ בְּלִי־פָחַד׃
To
grant us that we, being
rescued from the
hand of
our enemies,
Would
serve Him
without fear,

בְּתָמִים וּבִצְדָקָה לְפָנָיו כָּל־יְמֵי חַיֵּינוּ׃
dwIn
holiness and
righteousness before Him
all our
days.

וְאַתָּה הַיֶּלֶד נְבִיא עֶלְיוֹן תִּקָּרֵא כִּי לִפְנֵי יְהוָֹה תֵּלֵךְ לְפַנּוֹת אֶת־דְּרָכָיו׃
“And you,
child,
also will be
called the
dxprophet of
dythe
Most High;
For you will
go on
dzbefore the
Lord to
eaprepare His
ways;

לָתֵת דַּעַת הַיְשׁוּעָה לְעַמּוֹ בִּסְלִיחַת חַטֹּאתֵיהֶם׃
To
give His
people the knowledge of
salvation ▼By
ecthe
forgiveness of their
sins,

בְּרַחֲמֵי חֶסֶד אֱלֹהֵינוּ אֲשֶׁר בָּהֶם פְּקָדָנוּ הַנֹּגַהּ מִמָּרוֹם׃
Because of the
tender mercy of our
God,
With
which edthe
Sunrise from on
high will
visit us,

לְהָאִיר לְישְׁבֵי חשֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָוֶת וּלְהָכִין אֶת־רַגְלֵינוּ אֶל־דֶּרֶךְ הַשָּׁלוֹם׃
eeTo
shine on
those who
sit in
darkness and the
shadow of
death,
To
guide our
feet into the
efway of
peace.”

וַיִּגְדַּל הַיֶּלֶד וַיֶּחֱזַק בָּרוּחַ וַיְהִי בַּמִּדְבָּרוֹת עַד־יוֹם הֵרָאֹתוֹ אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
egNow the
child grew and was
becoming strong in
spirit, and he
lived in the
deserts until the
day of his
public appearance to
Israel.
