וַיְהִי בְּבֹאוֹ בַשַּׁבָּת אֶל־בֵּית אֶחָד מֵרָאשֵׁי הַפְּרוּשִׁים לֶאֱכֹל לָחֶם וְהֵמָּה אֹרְבִים לוֹ׃
It
happened that
when He
went into the
house of
one of the
▼▼I.e., members of the Sanhedrin
leaders of the
Pharisees on
the Sabbath to
eat bread,
bthey were
watching Him
▼closely.

וְהִנֵּה אִישׁ אֶחָד לְפָנָיו אֲשֶׁר גּוּפוֹ צָבָה מִמָּיִם׃
And
▼there in
front of Him was a
man suffering from ▼edema.

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־בַּעֲלֵי הַתּוֹרָה וְאֶל־הַפְּרוּשִׁים לֵאמֹר הֲמֻתָּר לִרְפֹּא בַשַּׁבָּת אִם־לֹא וַיַּחֲרִישׁוּ׃
And
Jesus responded and
said to the
▼▼I.e., experts in Mosaic Law
glawyers and
▼Pharisees,
“ iIs it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?”

וַיֹּאחֶז־בּוֹ וַיִּרְפָּאֵהוּ וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּ׃
But they
kept silent. And He
took hold of him and
healed him, and
sent him
away.

וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם מִי מִכֶּם אֲשֶׁר חֲמֹרוֹ אוֹ שׁוֹרוֹ יִפּוֹל אֶל־הַבְּאֵר וְלֹא־יְמַהֵר לְהַעֲלוֹתוֹ בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת׃
And He
said to them,
“ ▼▼Lit
Whose son of you...will fall kWhich one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

וְלֹא יָכְלוּ לְהָשִׁיב עַל־זֹאת דָּבָר׃
lAnd they
could offer no reply to
this.

וַיִּשָּׂא מְשָׁלוֹ אֶל־הַקְּרוּאִים בִּרְאוֹתוֹ אֵיךְ בָּחֲרוּ לָהֶם לְהָסֵב בְּרֹאשׁ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם׃
Now He
began telling a
parable to the
invited guests when He
noticed how mthey had been
picking out the
places of honor at the table, saying to them,

כִּי־יִקְרָא אֹתְךָ אִישׁ אֶל־הַחֲתֻנָּה אַל־תָּסֵב בְּרֹאשׁ פֶּן־יִקָּרֵא שָׁמָּה אִישׁ נִכְבָּד מִמֶּךָּ׃
“Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, ndo not ▼take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him,

וּבָא הַקֹּרֵא אוֹתְךָ וְאוֹתוֹ וְאָמַר אֵלֶיךָ פַּנֵּה מָקוֹם לָזֶה וְאָז תָּקוּם בִּכְלִמָּה לָקַחַת אֶת־הַמָּקוֹם הָאַחֲרוֹן׃
and the one who invited you ▼both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then qin disgrace you will proceed to occupy the last place.

אֲבָל כִּי תִקָּרֵא לֵךְ וְהָסֵב בַּמָּקוֹם הָאַחֲרוֹן לְמַעַן יָבֹא הַקֹּרֵא אוֹתְךָ וְאָמַר אֵלֶיךָ אֲהוּבִי עֲלֵה לְמַעְלָה מִזֶּה וְהָיָה־לְךָ כָבוֹד לִפְנֵי הַמְסֻבִּים עִמָּךְ׃
But whenever you are invited, go and ▼take the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, smove up higher’; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are ▼dining at the table with you.

כִּי כָּל־הַמְרוֹמֵם אֶת־עַצְמוֹ יִשָּׁפֵל וְהַמַּשְׁפִּיל אֶת־עַצְמוֹ יְרוֹמָם׃
uFor everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

וְגַם אֶל־הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר קָרָא אוֹתוֹ אָמַר כִּי תַעֲשֶׂה סְעוּדַת צָהֳרַיִם אוֹ סְעוּדַת עָרֶב אַל־תִּקְרָא לְאֹהֲבֶיךָ וּלְאַחֶיךָ וְלִקְרוֹבֶיךָ וְלִשְׁכֵנֶיךָ הָעֲשִׁירִים פֶּן־יִקְרְאוּ לְךָ גַּם־הֵמָּה וְהָיָה לְךָ לְשִׁלּוּם׃
Now He
also went on to
say to the one who had
invited Him,
“Whenever you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you to a meal in return, and that will be your ▼repayment.

אֲבָל כִּי־תַעֲשֶׂה מִשְׁתֶּה קְרָא לַעֲנִיִּים וּלְנִשְׁבָּרִים וּלְפִסְחִים וּלְעִוְרִים׃
But whenever you give a ▼banquet, invite people who are poor, who have disabilities, who are limping, and people who are blind;

וְאַשְׁרֶיךָ בַּאֲשֶׁר אֵין־לָהֶם לְשַׁלֶּם־לָךְ כִּי יְשֻׁלַּם לְךָ בִּתְחִיַּת הַצַּדִּיקִים׃
and you will be blessed, since they ▼do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at ythe resurrection of the righteous.”

וַיִּשְׁמַע זֹאת אֶחָד מִן־הַמְסֻבִּים וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַשְׁרֵי הָאֹכֵל לֶחֶם בְּמַלְכוּת הָאֱלֹהִים׃
Now when
one of
those who were
reclining at the table with Him
heard this, he
said to Him, “
zBlessed is
everyone who will
eat bread in the
kingdom of
God!”

וְהוּא אָמַר אֵלָיו אִישׁ אֶחָד עָשָׂה סְעוּדָה גְדוֹלָה וַיִּקְרָא לָרַבִּים׃
But He
said to him,
“ aaA man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;

וַיִּשְׁלַח אֶת־עַבְדּוֹ לְעֵת הַסְּעוּדָה לֵאמֹר אֶל־הַקְּרוּאִים בֹּאוּ כִּי־כְבָר מוּכָן הַכֹּל׃
and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is ready now.’

וַיָּחֵלּוּ כֻלָּם פֶּה אֶחָד לְהִתְנַצֵּל וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הָרִאשׁוֹן שָׂדֶה קָנִיתִי וְעָלַי לָצֵאת לִרְאֹתוֹ אֲבַקֵּשׁ מִמְּךָ נַקֵּנִי׃
And yet they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I purchased a field and I need to go out to look at it; ▼please consider me excused.’

וְאַחֵר אָמָר חֲמֵשֶׁת צִמְדֵי־בָקָר קָנִיתִי וַאֲנִי הֹלֵךְ לִבְחֹן אוֹתָם אֲבַקֵּשׁ מִמְּךָ נַקֵּנִי׃
And another one said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; ▼please consider me excused.’

וְאַחֵר אָמָר אִשָּׁה לָקַחְתִּי וּבַעֲבוּר זֹאת לֹא אוּכַל לָבוֹא׃
And another one said, ‘ adI took a woman as my wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’

וַיָּבֹא הָעֶבֶד וַיַּגֵּד אֶת־הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה לַאדֹנָיו וַיִּקְצֹף בַּעַל הַבַּיִת וַיֹּאמֶר לְעַבְדּוֹ מַהֵר צֵא אֶל־רְחֹבוֹת הָעִיר וְאֶל־חוּצוֹתֶיהָ וְהָבֵא הֵנָּה אֶת־הָעֲנִיִּים וְאֶת־הַנִּשְׁבָּרִים וְאֶת־הַעִוְרִים וְאֶת־הַפִּסְחִים׃
And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here those who are poor, those with disabilities, those who are blind, and those who are limping.’

וַיֹּאמֶר הָעֶבֶד אֲדֹנִי כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתָ כֵּן נַעֲשָׂה וְיֶשׁ־עוֹד מָקוֹם׃
And later the slave said, ‘Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’

וַיֹּאמֶר הָאָדוֹן אֶל־הָעֶבֶד צֵא אֶל־הַדְּרָכִים וְאֶל־הַגְּדֵרוֹת וּפְצֹר בָּהֶם לָבוֹא לְמַעַן יִמָּלֵא בֵיתִי׃
And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the roads and the hedges and press upon them to come in, so that my house will be filled.

כִּי אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם אֵין אֶחָד מִן־הָאֲנָשִׁים הַקְּרוּאִים הָהֵם אֲשֶׁר יִטְעַם סְעוּדָתִי׃
For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my dinner.’”

וַהֲמוֹן עַם־רָב הֹלְכִים אִתּוֹ וַיִּפֶן וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם׃
Now ▼large crowds were
going along with Him, and He
turned and
said to them,

אִישׁ כִּי־יָבוֹא אֵלַי וְלֹא יִשְׂנָא אֶת־אָבִיו וְאֶת־אִמּוֹ וְאֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹ וְאֶת־בָּנָיו וְאֶת־אֶחָיו וְאֶת־אַחְיֹתָיו וְאַף גַּם־אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ לֹא יוּכַל לִהְיוֹת תַּלְמִידִי׃
“ afIf anyone comes to Me and does not ▼▼I.e., in comparison to his love for Me
hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.

וַאֲשֶׁר לֹא יִשָּׂא אֶת־צְלָבוֹ וּבָא אַחֲרָי לֹא יוּכַל לִהְיוֹת תַּלְמִידִי׃
Whoever does not ahcarry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

כִּי מִי מִכֶּם הֶחָפֵץ לִבְנוֹת מִגְדָּל הֲלֹא יֵשֵׁב בָּרִאשׁוֹנָה וִיחַשֵּׁב אֶת־הַהוֹצָאוֹת אִם־הַשֵּׂג תַּשִּׂיג יָדוֹ לְהַשְׁלִימוֹ׃
For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?

פֶּן־יָשִׂים אֶת־הַיְסוֹד וְלֹא־יוּכַל לְכַלּוֹתוֹ וְהָיָה כָּל־הָרֹאִים יָקוּמוּ לְהַלְעִיג־לוֹ לֵאמֹר׃
Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who are watching it will begin to ridicule him,

כִּי־זֶה הָאִישׁ הֵחֵל לִבְנוֹת וְלֹא יָכֹל לְכַלּוֹת׃
saying, ‘This person began to build, and was not able to finish!’

אוֹ מִי־הוּא הַמֶּלֶךְ הַקָּם לְהִתְגָּרוֹת מִלְחָמָה בְּמֶלֶךְ אַחֵר וְלֹא יֵשֵׁב בָּרִאשׁוֹנָה וְיִתְיָעֵץ אִם־יוּכַל בַּעֲשֶׂרֶת אֲלָפִים לַעֲרֹךְ לִקְרַאת הַבָּא עָלָיו בְּעֶשְׂרִים אָלֶף׃
Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and aiconsider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to face the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

וְאִם־לֹא וְשָׁלַח אֵלָיו מַלְאָכִים בְּעוֹדֶנּוּ רָחוֹק לְבַקֵּשׁ שָׁלוֹם׃
Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and requests terms of peace.

כָּכָה כָּל־אִישׁ מִכֶּם אֲשֶׁר לֹא־נִפְטַר מִכָּל־רְכוּשׁוֹ לֹא יוּכַל לִהְיוֹת תַּלְמִידִי׃
So then, none of you can be My disciple who ajdoes not ▼give up all his own possessions.

טוֹב הַמֶּלַח וְאִם הַמֶּלַח הָיָה תָפֵל בַּמֶּה יְתֻקָּן׃
“Therefore, salt is good; but alif even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be ▼seasoned?

לֹא יִצְלַח גַּם לָאֲדָמָה גַּם לַדֹּמֶן הַחוּצָה יַשְׁלִיכֻהוּ מִי אֲשֶׁר אָזְנַיִם לוֹ לִשְׁמֹעַ יִשְׁמָע׃
It is useless either for the soil or the manure pile, so it is thrown out. anThe one who has ears to hear, ▼let him hear.”
