וְגַם־מָשָׁל דִּבֶּר אֲלֵיהֶם לְהִתְפַּלֵּל תָּמִיד וְלֹא לְהִתְרַפּוֹת׃
Now He was
telling them a
parable to
show that at
all times they
aought to
pray and not
bbecome discouraged,

וַיֹּאמַר שׁוֹפֵט הָיָה בְּעִיר אֶחָת אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָרֵא אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים וְלֹא־נָשָׂא פָנִים לְאָדָם׃
saying,
“In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not crespect any person.

וְאַלְמָנָה הָיְתָה בָּעִיר הַהִיא וַתָּבֹא אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר דִּינָה אֶת־דִּינִי מִמְּרִיבִי׃
Now there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my ▼opponent.’

וַיְמָאֵן מִיּוֹם אֶל־יוֹם וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן אָמַר בְּנַפְשׁוֹ גַּם־כִּי אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים אֵינֶנִּי יָרֵא וּלְאָדָם לֹא־אֶשָּׂא פָנִים׃
For a while he was unwilling; but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor erespect any person,

אֶעֱשֶׂה אֶת־דִּין הָאַלְמָנָה הַזֹּאת עַל־הוֹגִיעָהּ אֹתִי פֶּן־תָּבוֹא תָמִיד וּתְדַכְּאֵנִי בְּמִלִּים׃
yet fbecause this widow is bothering me, I will give her justice; otherwise ▼▼Or
in the end she may come and give me a black eye by continually coming she will hwear me out.’”

וַיֹּאמֶר הָאָדוֹן שִׁמְעוּ אֶת־אֲשֶׁר אֹמֵר דַּיַּן הָעַוְלָה׃
And
ithe
Lord said,
“Listen to what the unrighteous judge *said;

וְהָאֱלֹהִים הֲלֹא־הוּא יַעֲשֶׂה דִּין בְּחִירָיו הַקֹּרְאִים אֵלָיו יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה גַּם כִּי־יִתְמַהְמַהּ לְהוֹשִׁיעָם׃
now, will God not jbring about justice for His kelect who cry out to Him day ▼▼Or
and night? He is also patient toward them and night, and will He mdelay long for them?

אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי־יַעֲשֶׂה אֶת דִּינָם בִּמְהֵרָה אַךְ בֶּן־הָאָדָם בְּבֹאוֹ הֲיִמְצָא אֱמוּנָה בָּאָרֶץ׃
I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, nwill He find ▼faith on the earth?”

Now He
also told this parable to
some people who
ptrusted in
themselves that they were
righteous, and
qviewed others with contempt:

שְׁנֵי אֲנָשִׁים עָלוּ אֶל־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל הָאֶחָד פָּרוּשׁ וְהָאֶחָד מוֹכֵס׃
“Two men rwent up into the ▼▼I.e., the temple grounds
temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

וַיִּתְיַצֵּב הַפָּרוּשׁ לְבַדּוֹ וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל לֵאמֹר אֱלֹהִים אוֹדְךָ כִּי אֵינֶּנִי כִּשְׁאָר הָאָדָם הַגֹּזְלִים וְהָעשְׁקִים וְהַנֹּאֲפִים אוֹ גַם־כַּמֹּכֵס הַזֶּה׃
The Pharisee tstood and began praying this in regard to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, crooked, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

But the tax collector, wstanding some distance away, xwas even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but ywas beating his chest, saying, ‘God, be ▼merciful to me, the sinner!’

אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי־יָרַד זֶה לְבֵיתוֹ נִצְדָּק מִזֶּה כִּי כָּל־הַמֵּרִים אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ יִשָּׁפֵל וַאֲשֶׁר יַשְׁפִּילָהּ יְרוֹמָם׃
I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other one; aafor everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

so that He would
touch them; but when the
disciples saw it, they
began rebuking them.

what shall I
do to

good except God alone.

Now when
Jesus heard this, He
said to him,
“One thing you still lack; ajsell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have aktreasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

“ alHow hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!

Peter said, “
Behold,

own homes and
followed You.”

“Truly I say to you, arthere is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,

who will not receive many times as much at this time, and in asthe age to come, eternal life.”

וַיִּקַּח אֵלָיו אֶת־שְׁנֵים הֶעָשָׂר וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם הִנְנוּ עֹלִים יְרוּשָׁלָיְמָה וְיִמָּלֵא כָל־הַכָּתוּב בִּידֵי הַנְּבִיאִים עַל בֶּן־הָאָדָם׃
atNow He
took the
twelve aside and
said to them,
“Behold, auwe are going up to Jerusalem, and avall the things that have been written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.

hidden from them, and they did not

Those who
led the way were
sternly telling him to be
quiet; but he kept
crying out all the
more, “
