וַיְהִי בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם בְּהִקָּבֵץ עַם רָב וְאֵין לָהֶם מַה־יֹּאכֵלוּ וַיִּקְרָא יֵשׁוּעַ אֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם׃
In
those days,
awhen there was
again a
large crowd and they
had nothing to
eat,
Jesus summoned His
disciples and *
said to them,

נִכְמְרוּ רַחֲמַי עַל־הָעָם כִּי־זֶה שְׁלשֶׁת יָמִים עָמְדוּ עִמָּדִי וְאֵין לָהֶם לֶחֶם לֶאֱכֹל׃
“ bI feel compassion for the ▼people because they have remained with Me for three days already and have nothing to eat.

וְהָיָה בְּשַׁלְּחִי אוֹתָם רְעֵבִים לְבָתֵּיהֶם יִתְעַלְּפוּ בַּדָּרֶךְ כִּי־יֵשׁ מֵהֶם אֲשֶׁר בָּאוּ מִמֶּרְחָק׃
And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.”

וַיַּעֲנוּ אֹתוֹ תַּלְמִידָיו מֵאַיִן יוּכַל אִישׁ לְהַשְׂבִּיעַ אֶת־אֵלֶּה פֹּה בַמִּדְבָּר לָחֶם׃
And His
disciples replied to Him, “
Where will
anyone be
able to find enough ▼bread here in
this desolate place to
satisfy these people?”

וַיִּשְׁאַל אוֹתָם כַּמָּה כִכְּרוֹת־לֶחֶם יֵשׁ לָכֶם וַיֹּאמְרוּ שֶׁבַע׃
And He was
asking them,
“How many loaves do you have?” And they
said, “
Seven.”

וַיְצַו אֶת־הָעָם לָשֶׁבֶת לָאָרֶץ וַיִּקַח אֶת־שֶׁבַע כִּכְּרוֹת הַלֶּחֶם וַיְבָרֶךְ וַיִּפְרֹס וַיִּתֵּן אוֹתָם לְתַלְמִידָיו לָשֹוּם לִפְנֵיהֶם וַיָּשִׂימוּ לִפְנֵי הָעָם׃
And He *
directed the
▼people to
recline on the
ground; and
taking the
seven loaves, He
gave thanks and
broke them, and started
giving them to His
disciples to
serve, and they
served them to the
▼people.

וַיְהִי לָהֶם מְעַט דָּגִים קְטַנִּים וַיְבָרֶךְ וַיֹּאמֶר לָשֹוּם לִפְנֵיהֶם גַּם־אֶת־אֵלֶּה׃
They
also had a
few small fish; and
gafter He had
blessed them, He
told the disciples to
serve these as well.

וַיֹּאכְלוּ וַיִּשְׂבָּעוּ וַיִּשְׂאוּ מִן־הַפְּתוֹתִים הַנּוֹתָרִים שִׁבְעַת דּוּדִים׃
And they
ate and were
satisfied; and they
picked up seven large hbaskets full of
what was left over of the
broken pieces.

וְהָאֹכְלִים הָיוּ כְּאַרְבַּעַת אַלְפֵי אִישׁ וַיְשַׁלְּחֵם׃
About four thousand ▼▼I.e., 4,000 men plus women and children, cf. Matt 15:38
men were
there; and He
dismissed them.

immediately He
got into the
boat with His
disciples and

kAnd the
Pharisees came out and
began to
argue with Him,
ldemanding from Him a
▼▼I.e., confirming miracle
sign from
heaven,

test Him.

וַיֵּאָנַח בְּרוּחוֹ וַיֹּאמַר מָה־הַדּוֹר הַזֶּה מְבַקֶּשׁ־לוֹ אוֹת אָמֵן אֹמֵר אֲנִי לָכֶם אִם־יִנָּתֵן אוֹת לַדּוֹר הַזֶּה׃
oSighing deeply in His
spirit, He *
said,
“Why does this generation demand a ▼▼I.e., confirming miracle
sign? Truly I say to you, ▼▼Lit
if a sign shall be given, a very strong refusal
rno ▼▼I.e., confirming miracle
sign will be given to this generation!”

וַיַּעֲזֹב אוֹתָם וַיֵּרֶד בָּאֳנִיָּה וַיָּשָׁב וַיַּעֲבֹר אֶל־עֵבֶר הַיָּם׃
And
leaving them, He
again embarked and
went away to the
other side.

וַיִּשְׁכְּחוּ לָקַחַת אִתָּם לָחֶם וְלֹא־הָיָה לָהֶם בָּאֳנִיָּה בִּלְתִּי אִם־כִּכַּר־לֶחֶם אֶחָת׃
And
the disciples had
forgotten to
take bread, and did not
have more than one loaf in the
boat with them.

וַיַּזְהֵר אוֹתָם לֵאמֹר רְאוּ הִשָּׁמְרוּ לָכֶם מִשְּׂאֹר הַפְּרוּשִׁים וּמִשְּׂאֹר הוֹרְדוֹס׃
And He was
giving orders to them,
saying,
“ tWatch out! Beware of the ▼leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of vHerod.”

וַיַּחְשְׁבוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ עַל כִּי־לֶחֶם אֵין אִתָּנוּ׃
And they
began to
discuss with
one another the fact that they
had no bread.

וַיֵּדַע יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם מַה־תַּחְשְׁבוּ עַל כִּי־לֶחֶם אֵין לָכֶם הַעוֹד לֹא תַשְׂכִּילוּ וְלֹא תָבִינוּ וְלִבְּכֶם עוֹדֶנּוּ מְטֻמְטָם׃
And
Jesus,
aware of this, *
said to them,
“Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? wDo you not yet comprehend or understand? Do you still have your heart ▼hardened?

וַיָּבֹא אֶל־בֵּית צָיְדָה וַיָּבִיאוּ אֵלָיו אִישׁ עִוֵּר וַיִּתְחַנְנוּ לוֹ לָגַעַת בּוֹ׃
And they *
came to

some people *brought a
man who was blind to
▼Jesus and *
begged Him to
agtouch him.

וַיֹּאחֶז בְּיַד הָעִוֵּר וַיּוֹלִיכֵהוּ אֶל־מִחוּץ לַכְּפָר וַיָּרָק בְּעֵינָיו וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת־יָדָיו עָלָיו וַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּ לֵאמֹר הֲרֹאֶה אַתָּה דָּבָר׃
Taking the
man who was blind by the
hand, He
ahbrought him
out of the
village; and after
aispitting in his
eyes and
ajlaying His
hands on him, He
asked him,
“Do you see anything?”

וַיַּבֵּט וַיֹּאמֶר אֶרְאֶה אֶת־בְּנֵי הָאָדָם כִּי מִתְהַלְּכִים כְּאִילָנוֹת אֲנִי רֹאֶה׃
And he

said, “I
see people, for I
see them like trees,
walking around.”

Then again He
laid His
hands on his
eyes; and he
looked intently and was
restored, and
began to
see everything clearly.

וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּ אֶל־בֵּיתוֹ לֵאמֹר אַל־תָּבֹא בְּתוֹךְ הַכְּפָר וְאַל־תְּדַבֵּר לְאִישׁ בַּכְּפָר׃

sent him to his
home,
saying,
“Do not even enter althe village.”

amJesus went out,
along with His
disciples, to the
villages of
anCaesarea Philippi; and on the
way He
questioned His
disciples,
saying to them,
“Who do people say that I am?”

וַיַּעֲנוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ יוֹחָנָן הַמַּטְבִּיל וְיֵשׁ אֹמְרִים אֵלִיָּהוּ וַאֲחֵרִים אֹמְרִים אֶחָד מִן־הַנְּבִיאִים׃
aoThey
told Him,
saying, “
John the
Baptist; and
others say Elijah; and
others,
one of the
prophets.”

וַיִּשְׁאַל אֹתָם לֵאמֹר וְאַתֶּם מַה־תֹּאמְרוּ עָלַי מִי־אָנִי וַיַּעַן פֶּטְרוֹס וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אַתָּה הוּא הַמָּשִׁיחַ׃
And He
continued questioning them:
“But who do you say that I am?” apPeter answered and *
said to Him, “You are the
▼Christ.”

וַיְצַו אֹתָם בִּגְעָרָה לְבִלְתִּי דַבֵּר־עָלָיו לְאִישׁ׃
And
arHe
▼warned them to
tell no one about Him.

וַיָּחֶל לְלַמְּדָם כִּי צָרִיךְ בֶּן־הָאָדָם לֵעָנוֹת הַרְבֵּה וְיִמָּאֵס עַל־יְדֵי הַזְּקֵנִים וְהַכֹּהֲנִים הַגְּדוֹלִים וְהַסּוֹפְרִים וְיוּמַת וּמִקְצֵה שְׁלשֶׁת יָמִים קוֹם יָקוּם׃
atAnd He
began to
teach them that
authe
Son of
Man must suffer many things and be
rejected by the
elders and the
chief priests and the
scribes, and be
killed, and
after three days rise from the dead.

וְהוּא בְגָלוּי דִּבֶּר אֶת־הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וַיִּקָּחֵהוּ פֶטְרוֹס וַיָּחֶל לִגְעָר־בּוֹ׃
And He was
stating the
matter avplainly. And
Peter took Him
aside and
began to
rebuke Him.

But
turning around and
seeing His
disciples, He
rebuked Peter and *
said,
“Get behind Me, awSatan; for you are not setting your mind on ▼God’s purposes, but on man’s.”

וַיִּקְרָא אֶל־הָעָם וְאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הֶחָפֵץ לָלֶכֶת אַחֲרַי יְכַחֵשׁ בְּנַפְשׁוֹ וְיִשָּׂא אֶת־צְלָבוֹ וְיֵלֵךְ אַחֲרָי׃
And He
summoned the
crowd together with His
disciples, and
said to them,
“If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, aytake up his cross, and follow Me.

כִּי כָּל־אֲשֶׁר יַחְפֹּץ לְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ תֹּאבַד נַפְשׁוֹ מִמֶּנּוּ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר תֹּאבַד לוֹ נַפְשׁוֹ לְמַעֲנִי וּלְמַעַן הַבְּשׂוֹרָה הוּא יוֹשִׁיעֶנָּה׃
For azwhoever wants to save his ▼life will lose it, but whoever loses his ▼life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.

For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?

For what could a person give in exchange for his soul?

כִּי כָל־אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־הָיִיתִי אֲנִי וּדְבָרַי לוֹ לְחֶרְפָּה בַּדּוֹר הַנֹּאֵף וְהַחוֹטֵא הַזֶּה אַף־הוּא יִהְיֶה לְחֶרְפָּה לְבֶן־הָאָדָם בְּבוֹאוֹ בִּכְבוֹד אָבִיו עִם־הַמַּלְאָכִים הַקְּדוֹשִׁים׃
For bcwhoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, bdthe Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He becomes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
