וַיְהִי כְּכַלּוֹת יֵשׁוּעַ לְצַוֹּת אֶת־שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר תַּלְמִידָיו וַיֵּלֶךְ מִשָּׁם לְלַמֵּד וּלְבַשֵּר בְּעָרֵיהֶם׃
aWhen Jesus had
finished ▼giving instructions to His
twelve disciples, He
went on from there cto
teach and
▼preach in their
cities.

וְיוֹחָנָן שָׁמַע בְּבֵית הַסֹּהַר אֶת־מַעֲשֵׂי הַמָּשִׁיחַ וַיִּשְׁלַח שְׁנַיִם מִתַּלְמִידָיו׃
eNow while in
prison,
fJohn heard about the
works of
Christ, and he
sent word by his
disciples,

וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הַאַתָּה הוּא הַבָּא אִם־נְחַכֶּה לְאַחֵר׃
and
said to Him, “Are You
gthe
Coming One,
or are we to
▼look for someone else?”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם לְכוּ הַגִּידוּ לְיוֹחָנָן אֶת־אֲשֶׁר שְׁמַעְתֶּם וּרְאִיתֶם׃
Jesus answered and
said to them,
“Go and report to John what you hear and see:

עִוְרִים רֹאִים וּפִסְּחִים מִתְהַלְּכִים מְצֹרָעִים מְטֹהָרִים וְחֵרְשִׁים שֹׁמְעִים וּמֵתִים קָמִים וַעֲנִיִּים מִתְבַּשְּׂרֵי יְשׁוּעָה הֵם׃
i those who are blind receive sight and those who limp walk, those with leprosy are cleansed and those who are deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the jpoor have the ▼gospel preached to them.

וְאַשְׁרֵי אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יִכָּשֵׁל בִּי׃
And blessed is ▼any person who mdoes not ▼take offense at Me.”

הֵמָּה הָלְכוּ לָהֶם וְיֵשׁוּעַ הֵחֵל לְדַבֵּר אֶל־הֲמוֹן הָעָם עַל־אֹדוֹת יוֹחָנָן וַיֹּאמַר מַה־זֶּה יְצָאתֶם הַמִּדְבָּרָה לִרְאוֹת הֲקָנֶה אֲשֶׁר יִנּוֹעַ בָּרוּחַ׃
As
these disciples of John were
going away, Jesus began speaking to the
crowds about John:
“What did you go out into othe wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

וְאִם־לֹא מַה־זֶּה יְצָאתֶם לִרְאוֹת הַאִישׁ לָבוּשׁ בִּגְדֵי עֲדָנִים הִנֵּה הַלֹּבְשִׁים עֲדָנִים בְּבָתֵּי הַמְּלָכִים הֵמָּה׃
▼But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ ▼palaces!

וְאִם־לֹא מַה־זֶּה יְצָאתֶם לִרְאוֹת אִם־אִישׁ נָבִיא הֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי גַם־גָּדוֹל הוּא מִנָּבִיא׃
▼But what did you go out to see? sA prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.

כִּי זֶה הוּא אֲשֶׁר כָּתוּב עָלָיו הִנְנִי שֹׁלֵחַ מַלְאָכִי לְפָנֶיךָ וּפִנָּה־דַרְכְּךָ לְפָנֶיךָ׃
This is the one about whom it ▼is written: ‘ uBehold, I am sending My messenger ▼ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way before You.’

אָמֵן אֹמֵר אֲנִי לָכֶם לֹא קָם בִּילוּדֵי אִשָּׁה אִישׁ גָּדוֹל מִיּוֹחָנָן הַמַּטְבִּיל אַךְ הַקָּטֹן בְּמַלְכוּת הַשָּׁמַיִם גָּדוֹל הוּא מִמֶּנּוּ׃
Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

וּמִימֵי יוֹחָנָן הַמַּטְבִּיל עַד־הֵנָּה מַלְכוּת הַשָּׁמַיִם נִתְפְּשָׂה בְּחָזְקָה וְהַחֲזָקִים יַחֲזִיקוּ בָהּ׃
And wfrom the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been treated violently, and violent men take it by force.

כִּי כָל־הַנְּבִיאִים וְהַתּוֹרָה עֲדֵי יוֹחָנָן נִבָּאוּ׃
For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

וְאִם־תִּרְצוּ לְקַבֵּל הִנֵּה הוּא אֵלִיָּה הֶעָתִיד לָבוֹא׃
And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is xElijah who ▼was to come.

“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children,

חִלַּלְנוּ לָכֶם בַּחֲלִילִים וְלֹא רִקַּדְתֶּם קוֹנַנּוּ לָכֶם קִינָה וְלֹא סְפַדְתֶּם׃
and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not ▼mourn.’

For John came neither aceating nor addrinking, and they say, ‘ aeHe has a demon!’

וַיָּבֹא בֶן־הָאָדָם וְהוּא אֹכֵל וְשֹׁתֶה וַיֹּאמְרוּ הִנֵּה אִישׁ זוֹלֵל וְסֹבֵא וְאֹהֵב מוֹכְסִים וְחַטָּאִים וְנִצְדְּקָה הַחָכְמָה מֵאֵת בָּנֶיהָ׃
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a ▼heavy drinker, aga friend of tax collectors and ▼sinners!’ And yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

אָז הֵחֵל לִגְעֹר בֶּעָרִים אֲשֶׁר־רֹב גְּבוּרוֹתָיו נַעֲשׂוּ בְתוֹכָן וְלֹא שָׁבוּ׃
Then He
began to
reprimand the
cities in
which most of His
▼ ajmiracles were
done,
because they did not
repent.

אוֹי לָךְ כּוֹרָזִין אוֹי לָךְ בֵּית־צַיְדָה כִּי הַגְּבוּרוֹת אֲשֶׁר נַעֲשֹוּ בְקִרְבְּכֶן לוּ בְּצוֹר וּבְצִידוֹן נַעֲשֹוּ הֲלֹא־כְבָר שָׁבוּ בְּשַׂק וָאֵפֶר׃
“ akWoe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, alBethsaida! For if the ▼miracles that occurred in you had occurred in anTyre and aoSidon, they would have repented long ago in ▼▼I.e., symbols of mourning

bfAll things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father bgexcept the Son, and anyone to whom the Son determines to reveal Him.

בֹּאוּ אֵלַי כָּל־הָעֲמֵלִים וְהַטְּעוּנִים וַאֲנִי אָנִיחַ לָכֶם׃
“ bhCome to Me, all ▼▼Or
who work to exhaustion who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

קַבְּלוּ עֲלֵיכֶם אֶת־עֻלִּי וְלִמְדוּ מִמֶּנִּי כִּי־עָנָו וּשְׁפַל רוּחַ אָנֹכִי וְתִמְצְאוּ מַרְגּוֹעַ לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם׃
Take My yoke upon you and bjlearn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and bkyou will find ▼rest for your souls.

כִּי עֻלִּי נָעִים הוּא וְקַל מַשָּׂאִי׃
For bmMy yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”
