אָז בָּאוּ אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ הַסּוֹפְרִים וְהַפְּרוּשִׁים אֲשֶׁר מִירוּשָׁלָיִם׃
aThen some Pharisees and
scribes *came to
Jesus bfrom
Jerusalem and
said,

וַיֹּאמְרוּ מַדּוּעַ תַּלְמִידֶיךָ עֹבְרִים אֵת קַבָּלַת הַזְּקֵנִים כִּי אֵינָם רֹחֲצִים אֶת־יְדֵיהֶם בְּאָכְלָם לָחֶם׃
“Why do Your
disciples break the
tradition of the
elders? For they
cdo not
wash their
hands when they
eat bread.”

וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם מַדּוּעַ גַּם־אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים אֶת־מִצְוַת אֱלֹהִים בַּעֲבוּר קַבָּלַתְכֶם׃
And He
answered and
said to them,
“Why do you yourselves also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

כִּי אֱלֹהִים צִוָּה לֵאמֹר כַּבֵּד אֶת־אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ וּמְקַלֵּל אָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ מוֹת יוּמָת׃
For God said, ‘ dHonor your father and mother,’ and, ‘ eThe one who speaks evil of father or mother is to ▼be put to death.’

וְאַתֶּם אֹמְרִים הָאֹמֵר לְאָבִיו וּלְאִמּוֹ מִנְחָה לַיהוָֹה כֹּל מַה־שֶּׁאַתָּה נֶהֱנֶה מִמֶּנִּי אֵין עָלָיו לְכַבֵּד אֶת־אָבִיו וְאֶת־אִמּוֹ׃
But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been ▼▼Lit
a gift; i.e., an offering
given to God,”

וַתָּפֵרוּ אֶת־דְּבַר הָאֱלֹהִים בַּעֲבוּר קַבָּלַתְכֶם׃
he is not to ▼▼I.e., by supporting them with it
honor his father or mother.’ And by this you have invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

חֲנֵפִים הֵיטֵב נִבָּא עֲלֵיכֶם יְשַׁעְיָהוּ לֵאמֹר׃
You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you, by saying:

הָעָם הַזֶּה נִגַּשׁ בְּפִיו וּבִשְׂפָתָיו כִּבְּדוּנִי וְלִבּוֹ רִחַק מִמֶּנִּי׃
‘ iThis people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me.

וְתֹהוּ יִרְאָתָם אֹתִי מִצְוֺת אֲנָשִׁים מְלַמְּדִים׃
‘And in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as jdoctrines the commandments of men.’”

וַיִּקְרָא אֶל־הָעָם וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם שִׁמְעוּ וְהָבִינוּ׃
After Jesus
called the
crowd to Him, He
said to them,
“Hear and understand!

לֹא הַבָּא אֶל־הַפֶּה יְטַמֵּא אֶת־הָאָדָם כִּי אִם־הַיּוֹצֵא מִן־הַפֶּה הוּא מְטַמֵּא אֶת־הָאָדָם׃
k It is not what enters the mouth that defiles the person, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles the person.”

וַיִּגְּשׁוּ אֵלָיו תַּלְמִידָיו וַיֹּאמְרוּ הֲיָדַעְתָּ כִּי הַפְּרוּשִׁים בְּשָׁמְעָם אֶת־הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה נִכְשְׁלוּ־בוֹ׃
Then the
disciples came and *
said to Him, “Do You
know that the
Pharisees were
▼offended when they
heard this statement?”

וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמַר כָּל־מַטָּע אֲשֶׁר לֹא נָטַע אָבִי שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִם עָקוֹר יֵעָקֵר׃
But He
answered and
said,
“ mEvery plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.

הַנִּיחוּ אוֹתָם מְנַהֲלִים עִוְרִים הֵמָּה לַעִוְרִים וְכִי־יוֹלִיךְ עִוֵּר אֶת־הָעִוֵּר וְנָפְלוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם בְּתוֹךְ הַבּוֹר׃
Leave them alone; nthey are blind guides ▼▼Later mss add
of blind people of blind people. And pif a person who is blind guides another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.”

וַיַּעַן פֶּטְרוֹס וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו בָּאֵר לָנוּ אֶת־הַמָּשָׁל הַזֶּה׃
Peter ▼said to Him, “
rExplain the
parable to us.”

וַיֹּאמֶר יֵשׁוּעַ הַעוֹד גַּם־אַתֶּם בְּאֵין בִּינָה׃
▼Jesus
said,
“Are you also still lacking in understanding?

הַעוֹד לֹא תַשְׂכִּילוּ כִּי כָל־הַבָּא אֶל־הַפֶּה יוֹרֵד אֶל־הַכֶּרֶשׂ וְיִשָּׁפֵךְ מִשָּׁם לְמוֹצָאוֹת׃
Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is ▼▼Lit
thrown out into the latrine eliminated?

אֲבָל הַיּוֹצֵא מִן־הַפֶּה יוֹצֵא מִן־הַלֵּב וְהוּא מְטַמֵּא אֶת־הָאָדָם׃
But uthe things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person.

כִּי מִן־הַלֵּב יוֹצְאוֹת מַחְשְׁבוֹת רָע רְצִיחוֹת נִאוּפִים זְנוּנִים גְּנֵבוֹת עֵדֻיּוֹת שֶׁקֶר וְגִדּוּפִים׃
vFor out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, acts of adultery, other immoral sexual acts, thefts, false testimonies, and ▼slanderous statements.

אֵלֶּה הֵם הַמְטַמְּאִים אֶת־הָאָדָם אֲבָל אָכוֹל בְּלִי נְטִילַת יָדַיִם לֹא יְטַמֵּא אֶת־הָאָדָם׃
These are the things that defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person.”

וַיֵּצֵא יֵשׁוּעַ מִשָּׁם וַיָּסַר אֶל־גְּלִילוֹת צוֹר וְצִידוֹן׃
xJesus went away from there, and
withdrew into the
region of
yTyre and
zSidon.

וְהִנֵּה אִשָּׁה כְנַעֲנִית יָצְאָה מִן־הַגְּבוּלוֹת הָהֵם וַתִּצְעַק אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר חָנֵּנִי אֲדֹנִי בֶן־דָּוִד כִּי בִתִּי מְעֻנָּה מְאֹד עַל־יְדֵי שֵׁד׃
And a
Canaanite woman from that
region came out and
began to
cry out,
saying, “
Have mercy on me,
Lord,
aaSon of
David; my
daughter is
severely abdemon-possessed.”

וְהוּא לֹא־עָנָה אֹתָהּ דָּבָר וַיִּגְּשׁוּ תַלְמִידָיו וַיְבַקְשׁוּ מִמֶּנּוּ לֵאמֹר שַׁלְּחֶהָ כִּי־צֹעֶקֶת הִיא אַחֲרֵינוּ׃
But He did not
answer her
with even a
word. And His
disciples came up and
urged Him,
saying, “
Send her
away,
because she keeps
shouting ▼at us!”

But He
answered and
said,
“I was sent only to adthe lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

וְהִיא בָאָה וַתִּשְׁתַּחוּ לוֹ לֵאמֹר אֲדֹנִי עָזְרֵנִי׃
But she
came and
aebegan ▼to
bow down before Him,
saying, “
Lord,
help me!”

וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא טוֹב לָקַחַת אֶת־לֶחֶם הַבָּנִים וּלְהַשְׁלִיכוֹ לִצְעִירֵי הַכְּלָבִים׃
Yet He
answered and
said,
“It is not ▼good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

וַתֹּאמַר כֵּן אֲדֹנִי אֶפֶס כִּי־גַם־צְעִירֵי הַכְּלָבִים יֹאכְלוּ מִפֵּרוּרִים הַנֹּפְלִים מֵעַל־שֻׁלְחַן אֲדֹנֵיהֶם׃
And she
said, “
Yes,
Lord;
but please help, for
even the
dogs feed on the
crumbs that
fall from their
masters’ table.”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ אִשָּׁה גָּדְלָה אֱמוּנָתֵךְ יְהִי־לָךְ כִּרְצוֹנֵךְ וַתֵּרָפֵא בִתָּהּ מִן־הַשָּׁעָה הַהִיא׃
Then Jesus said to her,
“O woman, ahyour faith is great; it shall be done for you as you desire.” And her
daughter was
healed ▼at
once.

וַיַּעֲבֹר יֵשׁוּעַ מִשָּׁם וַיָּבֹא אֶל־יַם הַגָּלִיל וַיַּעַל הָהָרָה וַיֵּשֶׁב שָׁם׃

Sea of
Galilee, and after
going up on the
mountain, He was
sitting there.

And
▼large crowds came to Him
bringing with them
those who were limping,
had impaired limbs,
were blind,
or were unable to speak, and
many others, and they
laid them
down at His
feet; and
amHe
healed them.

וַיִּתְמְהוּ הָעָם בִּרְאוֹתָם אֶת־הָאִלְּמִים מְדַבְּרִים וְהַקִּטְּעִים בְּרִיאִים וְהַפִּסְּחִים מִתְהַלְּכִים וְהַעִוְרִים רֹאִים וַיְשַׁבְּחוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
So the
crowd was astonished as they
saw those who were
unable to speak talking, those with
impaired limbs ▼restored, those who were
limping walking around, and those who were
blind seeing; and they
aoglorified the
God of
Israel.

apNow Jesus called His
disciples to Him and
said,
“ aqI feel compassion for the ▼people, because they ▼have remained with Me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.”

disciples *said to Him, “
Where would we get
so many loaves in
this desolate place to
satisfy such a large crowd?”

“How many loaves do you have?” And they
said, “
Seven, and a
few small fish.”

seven loaves and the
fish; and after
avgiving thanks, He
broke them and started
giving them to the
disciples, and the
disciples gave them to the
crowds.

satisfied, and they
picked up what was
left over of the
broken pieces,
seven large awbaskets full.
