וּמִקֵּץ שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים לָקַח אִתּוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ אֶת־פֶּטְרוֹס וְאֶת־יַעֲקֹב וְאֶת־יוֹחָנָן אָחִיו וַיַּעֲלֵם בָּדָד עַל־הַר גָּבוֹהַּ׃
aSix days later,
Jesus *took with Him
bPeter and
▼James, and his
brother John, and *
led them
up on a
high mountain by
themselves.

face shone like the
sun, and His
garments became as
white as
light.

behold,
Moses and
Elijah appeared to them,
talking with Him.

וַיַּעַן פֶּטְרוֹס וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ אֲדֹנִי טוֹב הֱיוֹתֵנוּ פֹה אִם־תַּחְפֹּץ נַעֲשֶׂה־נָּא פֹה שָׁלשׁ סֻכּוֹת לְךָ אַחַת וּלְמשֶׁה אַחַת וּלְאֵלִיָּהוּ אֶחָת׃
Peter responded and
said to
Jesus, “
Lord, it is
good that we are
here.
If You
want,
dI will
make three ▼tabernacles here:
one for You,
one for
Moses, and
one for
Elijah.”

While he was
still speaking, a
bright cloud overshadowed them, and
behold,

am well pleased;
listen to Him!”

When the
disciples heard this, they
fell ▼face down to the ground and
were terrified.

וַיִּגַּשׁ יֵשׁוּעַ וַיִּגַּע־בָּם וַיֹּאמַר קוּמוּ וְאַל־תִּירָאוּ׃
And
Jesus came to
them and
touched them and
said,
“Get up, and ido not be afraid.”

וַיִּשְׂאוּ עֵינֵיהֶם וְלֹא רָאוּ אִישׁ בִּלְתִּי אֶת־יֵשׁוּעַ לְבַדּוֹ׃

raising their
eyes, they
saw no one except Jesus Himself alone.

וּבְרִדְתָּם מִן־הָהָר צִוָּה יֵשׁוּעַ אֹתָם לֵאמֹר לֹא תַגִּידוּ לְאִישׁ אֶת־דְּבַר הַמַּרְאֶה עַד אִם־קָם בֶּן־הָאָדָם מֵעִם הַמֵּתִים׃
jWhen they were
coming down from the
mountain,
Jesus commanded them,
saying,
“ kTell the vision to no one until lthe Son of Man has mrisen from the dead.”

וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּ תַלְמִידָיו לֵאמֹר לָמָּה זֶּה אֹמְרִים הַסּוֹפְרִים כִּי אֵלִיָּהוּ בּוֹא יָבוֹא בָּרִאשׁוֹנָה׃
And His
disciples asked Him, “
Why then do the
scribes say that
nElijah must come first?”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הִנֵּה אֵלִיָּהוּ יָבוֹא בָרִאשׁוֹנָה וְיָשִׁיב אֶת־הַכֹּל׃
And He
answered and
said,
“Elijah is coming and will restore all things;

אֲבָל אֹמֵר אֲנִי לָכֶם כִּי אֵלִיָּהוּ כְּבָר בָּא וְלֹא הִכִּירֻהוּ וַיַּעֲשֹוּ־בוֹ כִּרְצוֹנָם וְכֵן גַּם־בֶּן־הָאָדָם יְעֻנֶּה עַל־יָדָם׃
but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did ▼▼Lit
in him; or
in his case to him whatever they wanted. So also pthe Son of Man is going to suffer ▼at their hands.”

אָז הֵבִינוּ הַתַּלְמִידִים כִּי עַל־יוֹחָנָן הַמַּטְבִּיל דִּבֶּר אֲלֵיהֶם׃
Then the
disciples understood that He had
spoken to them
about John the
Baptist.

וַיְהִי כְּבוֹאָם אֶל־הֲמוֹן הָעָם וַיִּגַּשׁ אֵלָיו אִישׁ וַיִּכְרַע עַל־בִּרְכָּיו לְנֶגְדּוֹ׃

crowd, a
man came up to
▼Jesus,
falling on his
knees before Him and
saying,

וַיֹּאמַר אֲדֹנִי רַחֶם־נָא עַל־בְּנִי כִּי־מֻכֵּה יָרֵחַ הוּא וְחָלְיוֹ רָע כִּי־פְעָמִים רַבּוֹת הוּא נֹפֵל בָּאֵשׁ וּפְעָמִים רַבּוֹת אֶל־תּוֹךְ הַמָּיִם׃
“
▼Lord,
have mercy on my
son,
because he
uhas seizures and
suffers terribly; for he
often falls into the
fire and
often into the
water.

וָאָבִיא אֹתוֹ אֶל־תַּלְמִידֶיךָ וְלֹא יָכְלוּ לִרְפֹּא לוֹ׃
And I
brought him to Your
disciples, and they
could not
cure him.”

וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר הוֹי דּוֹר בִּלְתִּי מַאֲמִין וּפְתַלְתֹּל עַד־מָתַי אֶהְיֶה עִמָּכֶם עַד־מָתַי אֶסְבֹּל אֶתְכֶם הָבִיאוּ אוֹתוֹ אֵלַי הֵנָּה׃
And
Jesus answered and
said,
“You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.”

demon came out of him, and the
boy was
healed ▼at
once.

disciples came to
Jesus privately and
said, “
Why could we not
cast it
out?”

וַיֹּאמֶר יֵשׁוּעַ אֲלֵיהֶם מִפְּנֵי אֲשֶׁר אֵינְכֶם מַאֲמִינִים כִּי אָמֵן אֹמֵר אֲנִי לָכֶם אִם־יֵשׁ לָכֶם אֱמוּנָה כְּגַרְגֵּר הַחַרְדָּל וַאֲמַרְתֶּם אֶל־הָהָר הַזֶּה הֵעָתֵק מִזֶּה שָׁמָּה וְנֶעְתַּק מִמְּקוֹמוֹ וְאֵין דָּבָר אֲשֶׁר יִבָּצֵר מִכֶּם׃
And He *
said to them,
“Because of your meager faith; for truly I say to you, wif you have faith ▼the size of ya mustard seed, you will say to zthis mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and aanothing will be impossible for you. ▼▼Late mss add (traditionally v 21):
But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting ”

acAnd while they were
gathering together in
Galilee,
Jesus said to them,
“The Son of Man is going to be ▼handed over to men;

וְיַהַרְגֻהוּ וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי קוֹם יָקוּם וַיִּתְעַצְּבוּ מְאֹד׃
and aethey will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were

said, “
Yes.” And when he

house,
Jesus spoke to him
first,
saying,
“What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect ajcustoms or ▼▼I.e., a tax on each person in the census

strangers,”
Jesus said to him,
“Then the sons are ▼exempt.

אַךְ לְמַעַן לֹא־נִהְיֶה לָהֶם לְמִכְשׁוֹל לֵךְ אֶל־הַיָּם וְהִשְׁלַכְתָּ אֶל־תּוֹכוֹ חַכָּה וְאֶת־הַדָּג הָרִאשׁוֹן אֲשֶׁר יַעֲלֶה שָׂאֵהוּ וְכַאֲשֶׁר תִּפְתַּח אֶת־פִּיו תִּמְצָא בוֹ אִסְתִּירָא אוֹתוֹ קַח־לְךָ וְנָתַתָּ לָהֶם בַּעֲדִי וּבַעֲדֶךָ׃
However, so that we do not anoffend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a ▼▼A silver four-drachma Greek coin
stater. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”
