φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν κυρίου, εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ.

ⁱJohn appeared, baptizing in ^jthe wilderness and proclaiming ^ka baptism of ^lrepentance ^mfor the forgiveness of sins.

Ἐγένετο Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν.

And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, ⁿconfessing their sins.

καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία χώρα καὶ οἱ Ἱεροσολυμεῖται πάντες, καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν.

Now John was ^oclothed with camel’s hair and ^pwore a leather belt around his waist and ate ^qlocusts and ^rwild honey.

καὶ ἦν ὁ Ἰωάννης ἐνδεδυμένος τρίχας καμήλου καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφῦν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσθων ἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον.

And he preached, saying, ^s“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

καὶ ἐκήρυσσεν λέγων· ἔρχεται ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου ὀπίσω μου, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς κύψας λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ.

^tI have baptized you with water, but ^uhe will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

ἐγὼ ἐβάπτισα ὑμᾶς ἐν ὕδατι, αὐτὸς δὲ βαπτίσει ὑμᾶς ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ.

^vIn those days Jesus ^wcame from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲτ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην ὑπὸ Ἰωάννου.

And when he came up out of the water, immediately he ^xsaw ^ythe heavens being torn open ^zand the Spirit descending on him like a dove.

καὶ εὐθὺς ἀναβαίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος εἶδεν σχιζομένους τοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα ὡς περιστερὰν καταβαῖνον εἰς αὐτόν·

And ^aaa voice came from heaven, ^ab“You are my beloved Son; ▼

▼Or  my Son, my (or the) Beloved

with you I am well pleased.”

καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν· σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν σοὶ εὐδόκησα.

^adThe Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.

Καὶ εὐθὺς τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτὸν ἐκβάλλει εἰς τὴν ἔρημον.

^aeAnd he was in the wilderness forty days, being ^aftempted by ^agSatan. And he was with the wild animals, and ^ahthe angels were ministering to him.

καὶ ἦν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τεσσεράκοντα ἡμέρας πειραζόμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ σατανᾶ καὶ ἦν μετὰ τῶν θηρίων· καὶ οἱ ἄγγελοι διηκόνουν αὐτῷ.

^aiNow after John was arrested, Jesus ^ajcame into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,

Μετὰ δὲ τὸ παραδοθῆναι τὸν Ἰωάννην ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ θεοῦ

and saying, ^ak“The time is fulfilled, and ^althe kingdom of God is at hand; ^amrepent and believe in the gospel.”

καὶ λέγων ὅτι πεπλήρωται ὁ καιρὸς καὶ ἤγγικεν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ· μετανοεῖτε καὶ πιστεύετε ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ.

^anPassing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

Καὶ παράγων παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶδεν Σίμωνα καὶ Ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν Σίμωνος ἀμφιβάλλοντας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ· ἦσαν γὰρ ἁλεεῖς.

And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become ^aofishers of men.” ▼

▼The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου, καὶ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς γενέσθαι ἁλεεῖς ἀνθρώπων.

And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

καὶ εὐθὺς ἀφέντες τὰ δίκτυα ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ.

And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.

Καὶ προβὰς ὀλίγον εἶδεν Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα,

And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκάλεσεν αὐτούς. καὶ ἀφέντες τὸν πατέρα αὐτῶν Ζεβεδαῖον ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ μετὰ τῶν μισθωτῶν ἀπῆλθον ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ.

^aqAnd they went into Capernaum, and immediately ^aron the Sabbath ^ashe entered the synagogue and was teaching.

Καὶ εἰσπορεύονται εἰς Καφαρναούμ. καὶ εὐθὺς τοῖς σάββασιν εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν ἐδίδασκεν.

And ^atthey were astonished at his teaching, ^aufor he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ· ἦν γὰρ διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ὡς ἐξουσίαν ἔχων καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς.

And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,

Καὶ εὐθὺς ἦν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ καὶ ἀνέκραξεν

^av“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? ^awI know who you are— ^axthe Holy One of God.”

λέγων· τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ; ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς; οἶδά σε τίς εἶ, ὁ ἅγιος τοῦ θεοῦ.

But Jesus ^ayrebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”

καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων· φιμώθητι καὶ ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ.

And the unclean spirit, ^azconvulsing him and ^bacrying out with a loud voice, came out of him.

καὶ σπαράξαν αὐτὸν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον καὶ φωνῆσαν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ.

And they were all ^bbamazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? ^bcA new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

καὶ ἐθαμβήθησαν ἅπαντες ὥστε συνζητεῖν πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντας· τί ἐστιν τοῦτο; διδαχὴ καινὴ κατ᾽ ἐξουσίαν· καὶ τοῖς πνεύμασι τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις ἐπιτάσσει, καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ.

And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἡ ἀκοὴ αὐτοῦ εὐθὺς πανταχοῦ εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον τῆς Γαλιλαίας.

^bfleft the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἐξελθόντες ἦλθον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος καὶ Ἀνδρέου μετὰ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου.

Now ^bgSimon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.

ἡ δὲ πενθερὰ Σίμωνος κατέκειτο πυρέσσουσα, καὶ εὐθὺς λέγουσιν αὐτῷ περὶ αὐτῆς.

And he came and ^bhtook her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

καὶ προσελθὼν ἤγειρεν αὐτὴν κρατήσας τῆς χειρός· καὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτὴν ὁ πυρετός, καὶ διηκόνει αὐτοῖς.

That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or ^bioppressed by demons.

Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης, ὅτε ἔδυ ὁ ἥλιος, ἔφερον πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας καὶ τοὺς δαιμονιζομένους·

And the whole city was gathered together at the door.

καὶ ἦν ὅλη ἡ πόλις ἐπισυνηγμένη πρὸς τὴν θύραν.

^bjAnd he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And ^bkhe would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν πολλοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας ποικίλαις νόσοις καὶ δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλεν καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν λαλεῖν τὰ δαιμόνια ὅτι ᾔδεισαν αὐτόν.

^blAnd rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and ^bmthere he prayed.

Καὶ πρωῒ ἔννυχα λίαν ἀναστὰς ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κἀκεῖ προσηύχετο.

And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,

καὶ κατεδίωξεν αὐτὸν Σίμων καὶ οἱ μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ·

and they found him and said to him, ^bn“Everyone is looking for you.”

καὶ εὗρον αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὅτι πάντες ζητοῦσίν σε.

And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for ^bothat is why I came out.”

Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· ἄγωμεν ἀλλαχοῦ εἰς τὰς ἐχομένας κωμοπόλεις ἵνα κἀκεῖ κηρύξω· εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ἐξῆλθον.

^bpAnd ^bqhe went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Καὶ ἦλθεν κηρύσσων εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς αὐτῶν εἰς ὅλην τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλων.

^brAnd a leper ▼

▼Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13

came to him, imploring him, and ^btkneeling said to him, ^bu“If you will, you can make me clean.”

Καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λεπρὸς παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν καὶ γονυπετῶν καὶ λέγων αὐτῷ ὅτι ἐὰν θέλῃς δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι.

Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”

καὶ σπλαγχνισθεὶς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἥψατο καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· θέλω, καθαρίσθητι.

And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.

καὶ εὐθὺς ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἡ λέπρα, καὶ ἐκαθερίσθη.

And ^bvJesus ▼

sternly charged him and sent him away at once,

καὶ ἐμβριμησάμενος αὐτῷ εὐθὺς ἐξέβαλεν αὐτὸν

and said to him, ^bx“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, ^byshow yourself to the priest and ^bzoffer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, ^cafor a proof to them.”

καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· ὅρα, μηδενὶ μηδὲν εἴπῃς· ἀλλὰ ὕπαγε, σεαυτὸν δεῖξον τῷ ἱερεῖ καὶ προσένεγκε περὶ τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ σου ἃ προσέταξεν Μωϋσῆς εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς.

^cbBut he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter ^cca town, but was out in ^cddesolate places, and ^cepeople were coming to him from every quarter.

ὁ δὲ ἐξελθὼν ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν πολλὰ καὶ διαφημίζειν τὸν λόγον ὥστε μηκέτι αὐτὸν δύνασθαι φανερῶς εἰς πόλιν εἰσελθεῖν, ἀλλ᾽ ἔξω ἐπ᾽ ἐρήμοις τόποις ἦν. καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντοθεν.
