“At the
end of
aevery
seven years you shall
grant a
release.

מִקֵּץ שֶֽׁבַע־שָׁנִים תַּעֲשֶׂה שְׁמִטָּֽה׃

And
this is the
manner of the
release:
every creditor shall
release what he has
lent to his
neighbor. He shall
not exact it of his
neighbor, his
brother,
because the
Lord’s release has been
proclaimed.

וְזֶה דְּבַר הַשְּׁמִטָּה שָׁמוֹט כָּל־בַּעַל מַשֵּׁה יָדוֹ אֲשֶׁר יַשֶּׁה בְּרֵעֵהוּ לֹֽא־יִגֹּשׂ אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ וְאֶת־אָחִיו כִּֽי־קָרָא שְׁמִטָּה לַֽיהוָֽה׃

bOf a
foreigner you may
exact it, but
whatever of yours
is with your
brother your hand shall
release.

אֶת־הַנָּכְרִי תִּגֹּשׂ וַאֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֶת־אָחִיךָ תַּשְׁמֵט יָדֶֽךָ׃

cBut there will be
no poor among you;
dfor the
Lord will bless you in the
land that the
Lord your
God is
giving you for an
inheritance to
possess—

אֶפֶס כִּי לֹא יִֽהְיֶה־בְּךָ אֶבְיוֹן כִּֽי־בָרֵךְ יְבָֽרֶכְךָ יְהוָה בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹֽתֵן־לְךָ נַחֲלָה לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃

eif
only you will
strictly obey the
voice of the
Lord your
God, being
careful to
do all this commandment that I command you
today.

רַק אִם־שָׁמוֹעַ תִּשְׁמַע בְּקוֹל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹר לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת־כָּל־הַמִּצְוָה הַזֹּאת אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּֽוֹם׃

Lord your
God will
bless you,
fas he
promised you, and
gyou shall
lend to
many nations, but
you shall
not borrow, and
hyou shall
rule over
many nations, but they shall
not rule over you.

כִּֽי־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בֵּֽרַכְךָ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר־לָךְ וְהַֽעֲבַטְתָּ גּוֹיִם רַבִּים וְאַתָּה לֹא תַעֲבֹט וּמָֽשַׁלְתָּ בְּגוֹיִם רַבִּים וּבְךָ לֹא יִמְשֹֽׁלוּ׃ס

If among you,
one of your
brothers should
become poor, in
any of your
towns within your
land that the
Lord your
God is
giving you,
iyou shall
not harden your
heart or
shut your
hand against your
poor brother,
(THOT)
כִּֽי־יִהְיֶה בְךָ אֶבְיוֹן מֵאַחַד אַחֶיךָ בְּאַחַד שְׁעָרֶיךָ בְּאַרְצְךָ אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לָךְ לֹא תְאַמֵּץ אֶת־לְבָבְךָ וְלֹא תִקְפֹּץ אֶת־יָדְךָ מֵאָחִיךָ הָאֶבְיֽוֹן׃

but jyou shall open your
hand to him and lend him
sufficient for
his need,
whatever it may
be.

כִּֽי־פָתֹחַ תִּפְתַּח אֶת־יָדְךָ לוֹ וְהַעֲבֵט תַּעֲבִיטֶנּוּ דֵּי מַחְסֹרוֹ אֲשֶׁר יֶחְסַר לֽוֹ׃

Take care lest there be an
unworthy thought in your
heart and you
say, ‘The
seventh year, the
year of
release is
near,’ and your
keye look grudgingly ▼▼Or
be evil; also verse 10
on your
poor brother, and you
give him
nothing, and he
mcry to the
Lord against you, and
nyou
be guilty of
sin.

הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ פֶּן־יִהְיֶה דָבָר עִם־לְבָבְךָ בְלִיַּעַל לֵאמֹר קָֽרְבָה שְׁנַֽת־הַשֶּׁבַע שְׁנַת הַשְּׁמִטָּה וְרָעָה עֵֽינְךָ בְּאָחִיךָ הָֽאֶבְיוֹן וְלֹא תִתֵּן לוֹ וְקָרָא עָלֶיךָ אֶל־יְהוָה וְהָיָה בְךָ חֵֽטְא׃

You shall
give to him
freely, and
oyour
heart shall
not be
grudging when you
give to him,
because pfor
this the
Lord your
God will
bless you in
all your
work and in
all that you
undertake.

נָתוֹן תִּתֵּן לוֹ וְלֹא־יֵרַע לְבָבְךָ בְּתִתְּךָ לוֹ כִּי בִּגְלַל׀ הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה יְבָרֶכְךָ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכָֽל־מַעֲשֶׂךָ וּבְכֹל מִשְׁלַח יָדֶֽךָ׃

For qthere will
never cease to be
poor in the
land.
Therefore I command you,
r‘You shall
open wide your
hand to your
brother, to the
needy and to the
poor, in
your land.’

serve you
six years, and in the
seventh year you shall let him
go free from you.

free from you, you shall

go empty-handed.

furnish him
liberally out
of your

winepress.

Lord your
God has
blessed you, you shall

awl, and
put it through his
ear into the
door, and he shall
be your

servant; the Hebrew term
‘ebed designates a range of social and economic roles (see Preface)
forever. And to your
female slave ▼ you shall
do the
same.

וְלָקַחְתָּ אֶת־הַמַּרְצֵעַ וְנָתַתָּה בְאָזְנוֹ וּבַדֶּלֶת וְהָיָה לְךָ עֶבֶד עוֹלָם וְאַף לַאֲמָתְךָ תַּעֲשֶׂה־כֵּֽן׃

It shall
not seem
hard to
you when you let him
go free from you,
for at
half the
cost of a
hired worker he has
served you
six years. So the
Lord your
God will
bless you in
all that you
do.

born of your
herd and
flock you shall
dedicate to the
Lord your
God. You shall do
no work with the
firstborn of your
herd,
nor shear the
firstborn of
your flock.

כָּֽל־הַבְּכוֹר אֲשֶׁר יִוָּלֵד בִּבְקָרְךָ וּבְצֹֽאנְךָ הַזָּכָר תַּקְדִּישׁ לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לֹא תַעֲבֹד בִּבְכֹר שׁוֹרֶךָ וְלֹא תָגֹז בְּכוֹר צֹאנֶֽךָ׃

aaYou shall
eat it,
you and your
household,
before the
Lord your
God year by
year at the
place that the
Lord will
choose.

לִפְנֵי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ תֹאכֲלֶנּוּ שָׁנָה בְשָׁנָה בַּמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר־יִבְחַר יְהוָה אַתָּה וּבֵיתֶֽךָ׃

abBut
if it has any
blemish, if it is
lame or blind or has
any serious blemish whatever, you shall
not sacrifice it to the
Lord your
God.

וְכִֽי־יִהְיֶה בוֹ מוּם פִּסֵּחַ אוֹ עִוֵּר כֹּל מוּם רָע לֹא תִזְבָּחֶנּוּ לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃

You shall
eat it within your
towns.
acThe
unclean and the
clean alike may eat it, as though it were a
gazelle or a
deer.

בִּשְׁעָרֶיךָ תֹּאכֲלֶנּוּ הַטָּמֵא וְהַטָּהוֹר יַחְדָּו כַּצְּבִי וְכָאַיָּֽל׃

adOnly you shall
not eat its
blood; you shall pour it
out on the
ground like
water.
(THOT)
רַק אֶת־דָּמוֹ לֹא תֹאכֵל עַל־הָאָרֶץ תִּשְׁפְּכֶנּוּ כַּמָּֽיִם׃פ
