When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; ▼

▼Hebrew El Shaddai

walk before me, and be ^bblameless,

Ἐγένετο δὲ Αβραμ ἐτῶν ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα, καὶ ὤφθη κύριος τῷ αβραμ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ θεός σου· εὐαρέστει ἐναντίον ἐμοῦ καὶ γίνου ἄμεμπτος,

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. ▼

▼ perfect: or, upright, or, sincere

that I may make my covenant between me and you, and ^dmay multiply you greatly.”

καὶ θήσομαι τὴν διαθήκην μου ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον σοῦ καὶ πληθυνῶ σε σφόδρα.

And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

Then Abram ^efell on his face. And God said to him,

καὶ ἔπεσεν Αβραμ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεὸς λέγων

And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

“Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be ^fthe father of a multitude of nations.

καὶ ἐγὼ ἰδοὺ ἡ διαθήκη μου μετὰ σοῦ, Καὶ ἔσῃ πατὴρ πλήθους ἐθνῶν.

As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. ▼

▼ many…: Heb. multitude of nations

No longer shall your name be called Abram, ▼

▼ Abram means exalted father

but ⁱyour name shall be Abraham, ▼

▼ Abraham means father of a multitude

^kfor I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

καὶ οὐ κληθήσεται ἔτι τὸ ὄνομά σου Αβραμ, ἀλλ' ἔσται τὸ ὄνομά σου Αβρααμ, ὅτι πατέρα πολλῶν ἐθνῶν τέθεικά σε.

Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. ▼

▼ Abraham: that is, Father of a great multitude

I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make ^myou into nations, and ⁿkings shall come from you.

καὶ αὐξανῶ σε σφόδρα σφόδρα καὶ θήσω σε εἰς ἔθνη, καὶ βασιλεῖς ἐκ σοῦ ἐξελεύσονται.

And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

And I will ^oestablish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, ^pto be God to you and to your offspring after you.

καὶ στήσω τὴν διαθήκην μου ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον σοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματός σου μετὰ σὲ εἰς γενεὰς αὐτῶν εἰς διαθήκην αἰώνιον εἶναί σου θεὸς καὶ τοῦ σπέρματός σου μετὰ σέ.

And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

And ^qI will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and ^rI will be their God.”

καὶ δώσω σοι καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου μετὰ σὲ τὴν γῆν, ἣν παροικεῖς, πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Χανααν, εἰς κατάσχεσιν αἰώνιον καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτοῖς θεός.

And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. ▼

▼ wherein…: Heb. of thy sojournings

And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.

καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Αβρααμ σὺ δὲ τὴν διαθήκην μου διατηρήσεις, Σὺ καὶ τὸ σπέρμα σου μετὰ σὲ εἰς τὰς γενεὰς αὐτῶν.

And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised.

καὶ αὕτη ἡ διαθήκη, ἣν διατηρήσεις, ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ὑμῶν καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματός σου μετὰ σὲ εἰς τὰς γενεὰς αὐτῶν· περιτμηθήσεται ὑμῶν πᾶν ἀρσενικόν,

This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a ^tsign of the covenant between me and you.

καὶ περιτμηθήσεσθε τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας ὑμῶν, καὶ ἔσται ἐν σημείῳ διαθήκης ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ὑμῶν.

And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

He who is ^ueight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or ^vbought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,

καὶ παιδίον ὀκτὼ ἡμερῶν περιτμηθήσεται ὑμῖν πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν, ὁ οἰκογενὴς τῆς οἰκίας σου. καὶ ὁ ἀργυρώνητος ἀπὸ παντὸς υἱοῦ ἀλλοτρίου, ὃς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματός σου

And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. ▼

▼ he that is eight…: Heb. a son of eight days

both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant.

περιτομῇ περιτμηθήσεται ὁ οἰκογενὴς τῆς οἰκίας σου καὶ ὁ ἀργυρώνητος, καὶ ἔσται ἡ διαθήκη μου ἐπὶ τῆς σαρκὸς ὑμῶν εἰς διαθήκην αἰώνιον.

He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

καὶ ἀπερίτμητος ἄρσην, ὃς οὐ περιτμηθήσεται τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτοῦ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ὀγδόῃ, ἐξολεθρευθήσεται ἡ ψυχὴ ἐκείνη ἐκ τοῦ γένους αὐτῆς, ὅτι τὴν διαθήκην μου διεσκέδασεν.

And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah ▼

▼ Sarai and  Sarah mean princess

shall be her name.

Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῷ Αβρααμ Σαρα, ἡ γυνή σου, οὐ κληθήσεται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς σαρα ἀλλὰ Σαρρα ἔσται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς.

And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. ▼

▼ Sarah: that is Princess

I will bless her, and moreover, I will ^zgive ▼

▼Hebrew have given

you a son by her. I will bless her, and ^abshe shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

εὐλογήσω δὲ αὐτὴν καὶ δώσω σοι ἐξ αὐτῆς τέκνον· καὶ εὐλογήσω αὐτόν, καὶ ἔσται εἰς ἔθνη, καὶ βασιλεῖς ἐθνῶν ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔσονται.

And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. ▼

▼ she…: Heb. she shall become nations

Then Abraham ^adfell on his face ^aeand laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”

καὶ ἔπεσεν Αβρααμ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον καὶ ἐγέλασεν καὶ εἶπεν ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ αὐτοῦ λέγων εἰ τῷ ἑκατονταετεῖ γενήσεται, καὶ Εἰ Σαρρα ἐνενήκοντα ἐτῶν οὖσα τέξεται;

Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!”

εἶπεν δὲ Αβρααμ πρὸς τὸν θεόν Ισμαηλ οὗτος ζήτω ἐναντίον σου.

And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

God said, “No, but ^afSarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name ^agIsaac. ▼

▼ Isaac means he laughs

I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

εἶπεν δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῷ Αβρααμ Ναί· ἰδοὺ Σαρρα ἡ γυνή σου τέξεταί σοι υἱόν, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ισαακ, καὶ στήσω τὴν διαθήκην μου πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰς διαθήκην αἰώνιον καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ μετ' αὐτόν.

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and ^aimultiply him greatly. He ^ajshall father twelve princes, and ^akI will make him into a great nation.

περὶ δὲ Ισμαηλ ἰδοὺ ἐπήκουσά σου· ἰδοὺ εὐλόγησα αὐτὸν καὶ αὐξανῶ αὐτὸν καὶ πληθυνῶ αὐτὸν σφόδρα· δώδεκα ἔθνη γεννήσει, καὶ δώσω αὐτὸν εἰς ἔθνος μέγα.

And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

But ^alI will establish my covenant with Isaac, ^amwhom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.”

τὴν δὲ διαθήκην μου στήσω πρὸς Ισαακ, ὃν τέξεταί σοι Σαρρα εἰς τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ τῷ ἑτέρῳ.

But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

When he had finished talking with him, ^anGod went up from Abraham.

συνετέλεσεν δὲ λαλῶν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἀνέβη ὁ θεὸς ἀπὸ Αβρααμ.

And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

Then Abraham took Ishmael his son and all those born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him.

καὶ ἔλαβεν Αβρααμ Ισμαηλ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντας τοὺς οἰκογενεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀργυρωνήτους καὶ πᾶν ἄρσεν τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αβρααμ Καὶ περιέτεμεν τὰς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης, καθὰ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεός.

And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.

Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

Αβρααμ δὲ ἦν ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐτῶν, ἡνίκα περιέτεμεν τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτοῦ·

And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

Ισμαηλ δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐτῶν δέκα τριῶν ἦν, ἡνίκα περιετμήθη τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτοῦ.

And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

That very day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised.

ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης περιετμήθη Αβρααμ καὶ Ισμαηλ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ·

In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.

And all the men of his house, those born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ οἰκογενεῖς καὶ οἱ ἀργυρώνητοι ἐξ ἀλλογενῶν ἐθνῶν, περιέτεμεν αὐτούς.

And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.
