1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside ^{▼▼Lit from the belly of} the fish: ^f

2 I called to the Lord in my distress, ^g
and He answered me.
I cried out for help in the belly of ^{▼▼Sheol: A Hebrew word for either the grave or the realm of the dead}Sheol; ⁱ
You heard my voice. ^j
3 You threw me into the depths, ^k
into the heart of the seas, ^l
and the current ^{▼▼Lit river} overcame me.
All Your breakers and Your billows swept over me. ⁿ
4 But I said: I have been banished ^o
from Your sight, ^p

toward Your holy temple. ^r
5 The waters engulfed me up to the neck; ^{▼▼Or me, threatening my life

the watery depths overcame me;

the earth with its prison bars closed behind me forever! ^w

7 As my life was fading away, ^aa

My prayer came to You, ^ad
to Your holy temple. ^ae
8 Those who cling to worthless idols ^af
forsake faithful love, ^ag
9 but as for me, I will sacrifice ^ah to You
with a voice of thanksgiving. ^ai
I will fulfill ^aj what I have vowed.
