This change may have been made so that young Levites would not become lazy or waste time, but would learn discipline and responsibility early. Also, now that the Levites no longer had to carry the heavy tabernacle, but worked in the temple, the work was not too hard for younger men. The population of Israel was also growing, so more Levites were needed to help with the increased worship and sacrifices.
