1 Chronicles 24:2
v. 2–6: The priests were divided by casting lots, so that God would decide the order and there would be no arguments or favoritism. The process was done publicly, with the king, princes, and priests watching, to make sure everything was fair. The Levite Shemaiah wrote down the names and drew the lots (1 Chronicles 24:6 a). Casting lots was a way to trust God’s choice, and it brought peace among the people. Even in the New Testament, Matthias was chosen as an apostle by lot, with prayer (Acts 1:24, 26 b).
