‏ 1 Corinthians 14:6

On Spiritual Gifts

In this passage, Paul shows why speaking in unknown languages without interpretation is useless for the church. He explains that spiritual gifts are meant to help others understand and grow in faith. Using gifts in a way that confuses people, or that only shows off, does not help anyone. Paul uses several examples to make his point.

v. 6: Paul says, “Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?”(1 Corinthians 14:6 a). If someone speaks in a language no one understands, it does not help the listeners. Even the best teaching or message is useless unless people can understand it.
