God’s special presence in Jerusalem and the beautiful temple did not keep them from turning to idols (1 Kings 14:22-24 ). When God’s people turn away from Him, He allows them to fall into deeper sin and shame, just as the apostle Paul later described for the Gentiles (Romans 1:21,24,26,27 ).
