‏ 1 Kings 8:12

Solomon’s Words at the Dedication

This passage shows how Solomon responded when the priests saw the cloud of God’s glory fill the temple. The cloud was a sign of God’s presence, but it also caused fear and wonder. Solomon explained its meaning and led the people in blessing and dedicating the temple to the Lord.

v. 12–13: Solomon encouraged the priests, who were amazed and a little afraid because of the thick cloud that filled the temple (1 Kings 8:12 a). He reminded them that God had said, The Lord said that he would dwell in the thick darkness (Leviticus 16:2 b). This cloud was a sign of God’s favor, not His anger. Solomon welcomed God’s presence, saying, I have surely built thee a house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide in for ever (1 Kings 8:13 c). He wanted the people and priests to know that God was truly among them.
