‏ 2 Chronicles 23

Preparations to Restore Judah

This section tells how God used Jehoiada the priest to prepare for the return of the rightful king, Joash, after six years of Athaliah’s rule. During this dark time, the people suffered under Athaliah, but God’s promise to keep David’s family on the throne remained true (Psalm 89:35 a). Jehoiada was wise, patient, and brave. He waited until the right moment, gathered support from key leaders, and made careful plans. His actions show faith in God’s promise and respect for holy things, reminding us that God always raises up leaders to fulfill His word.

v. 1: Jehoiada acted with great wisdom and patience. He waited until Joash was old enough and the people were ready for change. Then he made an agreement with the commanders and gathered them to support the true king .

v. 2: Jehoiada also called the Levites and the leaders of Israel to Jerusalem. They followed his lead and were ready to help restore the royal family .

v. 3: In a secret meeting at the temple, Jehoiada made a covenant with them. He reminded them of God’s promise: The king's son shall reign, as the Lord has said. Their plan was based on faith in God’s word, not just politics.

v. 4-7: Jehoiada gave careful instructions to keep the temple holy. Only the priests and Levites were allowed inside, while everyone else had to stay out on pain of death (2 Chronicles 23:6-7 b). Even in a time of crisis, he respected God’s house and rules.

v. 8: The Levites and all Judah obeyed Jehoiada’s commands. Everyone kept the plan secret until the right time (2 Chronicles 23:8 c). Their unity and discipline helped make the plan a success.

v. 11: With courage, Jehoiada brought out Joash, crowned him, and gave him the law scroll as a testimony. He and his sons anointed Joash as king . Jehoiada risked his life for what was right, trusting that God would protect him. Later, one of his sons, Zechariah, would also stand for truth, even though Joash would forget this kindness (2 Chronicles 24:20 d).

Joash Crowned and Athaliah Slain

This section describes the dramatic events when Joash was made king and Athaliah’s evil rule came to an end. The people were overjoyed to see a descendant of David on the throne again. Jehoiada and the leaders made sure everything was done in order, restoring both the king’s authority and the true worship of the Lord. The story shows how God keeps His promises, removes the wicked, and brings hope after dark times.

v. 12-13: When the people saw Joash standing at his rightful place, they rejoiced greatly. After so many years without a true king from David’s line, they were surprised and happy to see God’s promise fulfilled. They praised the king and sang songs of praise to God (2 Chronicles 23:12-13; Isaiah 11:1 e).

v. 14-15: Athaliah entered the temple, shouting, Treason, treason! But no one supported her. Jehoiada ordered that she be taken out so she would not be killed in the temple. She was put to death immediately, ending her wicked rule (2 Chronicles 23:14-15 f).

v. 16: Jehoiada made a covenant with the people and the king. They all agreed to serve as the Lord’s people. This promise united everyone to obey God and respect the king as God’s chosen ruler (2 Chronicles 23:16; 2 Kings 11:17 g).

v. 17: The people destroyed the temple of Baal, his altars, and images. They also killed the priest of Baal, as God’s law required for those who led others into idolatry (2 Chronicles 23:17; Deuteronomy 13:5-6 h).

v. 18-19: Jehoiada restored the temple worship. He put the priests and Levites back in their roles as Moses and David had commanded. There was singing and rejoicing as they offered sacrifices. The gatekeepers also made sure only those who were clean could enter the temple (2 Chronicles 23:18-19; Romans 5:11 i).

v. 20-21: Joash was brought in state to the palace and seated on the throne. The people were filled with joy and peace, and there was no more opposition. The kingdom was finally set right, and everyone was glad to see David’s line ruling again (2 Chronicles 23:20-21 j).
