‏ 2 Chronicles 31

Hezekiah Destroys Idolatry

This section tells what happened after the Passover celebration. The people did not just stop at worship; they wanted to show real change in their everyday lives. True worship leads to action, not just ceremonies. The people became serious about removing sin and following God. Hezekiah continued to bring order to the way the priests and Levites served, making sure everything was done properly. The people gave generously to support God’s work, and God blessed them for their faithfulness.

v. 1: After celebrating the Passover, the people went out right away to destroy all the idols and places of false worship . They did this not only in Judah and Benjamin but also in Ephraim and Manasseh. They broke down altars, images, and groves everywhere they could. They did not go home until all the idols were gone. This showed their strong desire to get rid of everything that offended God. As the prophet said, What have I now to do any more with idols?(Isaiah 2:20; 31:6-7 a).

v. 2: Hezekiah reorganized the priests and Levites according to the plan King David had made long ago . Each person knew their job and when to do it. Priests offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Levites helped the priests and also gave thanks and praise to God. Good organization helped the temple run smoothly (1 Chronicles 23:4-5 b).

v. 3: Hezekiah gave part of his own wealth to pay for the daily offerings and the sacrifices on Sabbaths, new moons, and festivals . He wanted to honor God and make things easier for the people. Leaders should use what they have to support the worship of God and help His people.

v. 4: Hezekiah ordered the people of Jerusalem, and later all Judah, to give what belonged to the priests and Levites . This way, the priests and Levites could focus on studying and teaching the law of the ORD. It is important for leaders to be supported so they can do God’s work with joy and not worry about their needs.

v. 5-6: As soon as the command went out, the people brought their firstfruits and tithes generously (2 Chronicles 31:5-6 c). They brought so much that it was piled up in heaps. The priests took what they needed for themselves and their families, and the rest was stored. God was given His share from every harvest.

v. 7: The people kept adding to the heaps all through the harvest season. When the harvest ended, the heaps were finished .

v. 8: When Hezekiah and the leaders saw the heaps, they thanked God for His blessing and praised the people for their faithful giving . They did not criticize them for past neglect, but blessed them for their present obedience.

v. 9-10: Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the heaps. They explained that they had used what they needed, and the rest was left over because God had blessed the people so much (2 Chronicles 31:9-10 d). They said, Since they began to bring in the offerings, the Lord has blessed his people(Haggai 2:19; Malachi 3:10-11 e; Ezekiel 44:30 f). This shows that when people give to God, He blesses them even more.

The Maintenance of the Priests

This section explains how Hezekiah made sure that the tithes and offerings brought by the people were stored and used wisely. Hezekiah wanted everything in the temple to be well organized. He made sure that the priests and Levites—and their families—were cared for so they could focus on serving God. He also made sure that God’s work was done with honesty and order. In the end, Hezekiah’s faithful leadership brought blessing and success to all he did for God’s house and his kingdom.

v. 11: Hezekiah ordered special rooms to be prepared in the temple to store the offerings and tithes safely . He did not want the gifts left in piles where they could be wasted or stolen.

v. 12-13: The people brought their offerings and tithes, and everything was kept in these store-chambers. Hezekiah appointed trustworthy men to be in charge of these treasures so they would not be lost or misused (2 Chronicles 31:12-13 g).

v. 14: Officers were chosen to distribute the offerings fairly to the priests and Levites. These leaders made sure everyone had enough for themselves and their families .

v. 15: The priests who stayed in the cities also received part of these offerings. This included the priests who taught the people about God, not just those who worked at the temple .

v. 16: Even the male children of the priests and Levites, from three years old and up, shared in the food and supplies that were given. This made sure their whole families were cared for .

v. 17: The Levites, starting from the age of twenty and older, also received their share. Everyone who served in God’s house was provided for .

v. 18: Wives and children of the priests and Levites were included in these blessings. God’s law provided enough for all, so the whole family could have what they needed .

v. 19: Priests and Levites who lived in the countryside and villages also received their portion. No one who served God was forgotten, no matter where they lived .

v. 20: Hezekiah did these good things all over Judah. His desire was to please God in everything he did .

v. 21: Hezekiah worked hard and sincerely in serving God and leading his people. Because he acted with all his heart, God made his efforts successful. Whatever he did in the service of the house of God, he prospered(2 Chronicles 31:21 h).
