But Abishai, one of David’s loyal men, came to his rescue just in time (2 Samuel 21:17 ). With this help, David was able to defeat the giant. After this, David’s men insisted that he should not go out to battle again, so that the light of Israel would not be put in danger. They wanted to protect their king because he was too important to lose (2 Samuel 18:3 ).
