2 Samuel 7:12-16
v. 12–13: God told David that after he died, his son would become king. God said, I will set up your seed after you and he shall build a house for my name (2 Samuel 7:12–13 a). This meant that David’s son Solomon would build the temple. God promised to make Solomon’s kingdom strong and lasting. – v. 14–15: God said, I will be his father, and he shall be my son (2 Samuel 7:14 b). God promised to treat David’s son as His own child. If Solomon did wrong, God would correct him, but not reject him. God’s love and mercy would always stay with David’s family, even if they made mistakes (1 Kings 11:1; Job 23:6 c). – v. 16: God said David’s family and kingdom would last forever. This promise was not just for Solomon, but also pointed to Jesus, the Messiah, who is called the Son of David (2 Samuel 7:13, 16; Psalm 89:3–4 d; Luke 1:32 e). Jesus would rule over an everlasting kingdom, and His people would never be cast off, even when they fail (Hebrews 1:5 f).
