Daniel 12
The Promised Appearance of Michael; The Prophecy Sealed Up.In this final chapter, Daniel is given hope and comfort after hearing about the troubles that would come upon God's people. The prophecy promises that God’s help is certain and that He will save His people, reward the faithful, and reveal the truth at the right time. Even in times of great distress, believers are encouraged to look to Christ and the life to come for true comfort.v. 1: When the persecution against God’s people is at its worst, Michael—the great prince and protector—will stand up to defend them . Michael is another name for Christ, who stands up for the church and fights for believers. His help brings deliverance, both in history and at the end of time. v. 2: There will be a time of great trouble, worse than any before. But God’s people, whose names are written in the book of life, will be delivered. This points to both the rescue of God’s faithful during hard times and the final salvation at the end of the world (Daniel 12:2; Revelation 20:15 a). v. 3: Many who have died will be raised—some to eternal life, others to shame and everlasting contempt (Daniel 12:3; John 5:29 b; Acts 24:15 c). This is a promise of the resurrection, showing that there will be justice for everyone in the life to come. v. 4: Those who are wise and help others to do what is right will shine like stars forever. God will reward teachers and those who lead others to faith with special glory in heaven (Daniel 12:4; James 5:20 d). Daniel is told to seal up the prophecy for now, because the full meaning would not be clear until the future. Many people will search for understanding, and knowledge will increase as time goes on (Daniel 12:4; Hosea 6:3 e).This chapter reminds us that God knows the future and will always protect His people. Even when things are hard to understand, God’s word will come true, and one day everything will be made clear. The Time of the End Revealed This section describes Daniel’s final vision, where he sees two other heavenly beings and hears a discussion about how long the time of suffering and trouble will last. One of the angels gives a solemn answer, swearing by God that the period will have a set limit. Daniel still does not fully understand, but he is told that the words are sealed until the end. The passage encourages faith and patience, reminding us that God’s plans are sure, even when we do not understand everything. v. 5: Daniel looks and sees two other angels standing on each side of a river. This vision comes after Daniel has seen the man clothed in linen, and now he sees more heavenly messengers, showing the importance of the message and the truth that God sends many helpers from heaven . v. 6: One of the angels speaks to the man dressed in linen, who is above the waters of the river. He asks, “How long will it be until these amazing things are finished?” This question is about the length of the time of suffering and trouble for God’s people. It shows that even the angels care about God’s people and want to know when their suffering will end . v. 7: The man in linen lifts both hands toward heaven and swears by God who lives forever that it will be “for a time, times, and half a time”—that is, three and a half years. He says that when the power of the holy people has been completely broken, then all these things will be finished. This means the suffering will last a set period, but it will not go on forever. God is in control, and He knows exactly when the end will come . v. 8: Daniel hears the answer but does not understand it. He asks, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these things?” Like Daniel, we do not always understand God’s plans, but we can trust Him because He knows what is best. v. 9: The angel tells Daniel to go his way, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end. Some things are kept secret until God’s chosen time. We are called to be faithful and patient, even when we do not understand everything. v. 10: Many will be purified, made clean, and refined during this time, but the wicked will continue to do evil and will not understand. Only those who are wise and love God will understand what is happening. Trouble and suffering can help believers grow in faith and purity, but the wicked will remain blind to God’s truth . v. 11: The angel says that from the time the daily sacrifice is stopped and the “abomination that causes desolation” is set up, there will be 1,290 days. This is another way of saying that this time of trouble will be limited and measured by God. v. 12: Blessed is the one who waits and reaches the end of the 1,335 days. God promises a blessing to those who remain faithful and patient until the end of the difficult time. v. 13: The angel tells Daniel to go his way until the end. He will rest (die), but he will rise to receive his reward at the end of the days. This is a promise of resurrection and hope for all who trust in God, even if they do not see the fulfillment in their lifetime (Daniel 12:13 f).
