Esther 10
The Glory of Mordecai. This final section highlights the greatness of King Ahasuerus and Mordecai. The king’s power and wealth brought him glory, but it is Mordecai’s virtue and goodness that are remembered most. Mordecai’s rise shows how God honors those who serve Him faithfully. He used his position not for personal gain but for the good of his people, becoming a model of humility, wisdom, and kindness.v. 1-2: King Ahasuerus was very powerful, ruling over a vast empire. He collected great wealth, including an additional tax on his subjects for a special purpose (Esther 10:1 a). His many acts of power were recorded in the Persian chronicles (Esther 10:2 b), but those records are long gone. In contrast, the story of God’s kingdom and His people remains in the Bible, which will last forever (Psalm 9:6; Daniel 2:44 c). – v. 3: Mordecai became great in two ways. First, he was honored by the king, becoming second in command in the empire. Though he had spent years quietly serving at the king’s gate, his faithfulness was rewarded, and he rose to a position of great influence. His achievements were written in the chronicles as a part of the king’s success. Second, he was highly respected among the Jews. They did not envy his success but supported him and trusted his leadership (Esther 10:3 d).Mordecai’s goodness was what truly made him great. He used his position to help others rather than seeking wealth or power for himself. He stayed loyal to his Jewish heritage and faith, even as he served in a Persian court. He worked for the welfare of his people and was a humble, approachable leader who cared for all the Jews equally. He spoke peace to everyone and was like a father to the nation. His humility and kindness earned him the love and respect of all his people.Mordecai’s leadership is an example of how those in power should act. They should use their influence to serve others and seek the good of all, not just themselves or a select group. As the Bible says, we should pray for leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceable lives in godliness and honesty (1 Timothy 2:2 e).
