Exodus 30:12-13
v. 12-13: God commanded that whenever the people were counted, each person must give half a shekel as an offering to the Lord (v. 12, 13 a). This offering was called a ransom for their souls, so that no plague would come on them when they were numbered. It reminded them that their lives belonged to God and that they depended on His mercy for protection and life. –
