She was left alone, unwanted, and helpless. This shows how weak and unimportant Israel was at the beginning. God’s people were not chosen because they were strong or good, but simply because of God’s mercy (Deuteronomy 7:7 ). This also reminds us that all people are spiritually helpless without God’s help and need to be “born again” (John 3:7 ).
