Hebrews 8
The Priesthood of Christ. This passage summarizes the main points about the greatness of Jesus as our High Priest. It explains what we have in Christ, where he is now, and what kind of sanctuary he serves in. Unlike earthly priests, Jesus is the final and perfect High Priest, serving in heaven itself for the good of all who trust in him. The old tabernacle and priests were only pictures of what Christ now truly fulfills for us.v. 1: We have a High Priest in Jesus, who is greater than any priest before. He is perfectly qualified for this role, and all previous priests were only shadows pointing to him. Jesus sits at the right hand of God, showing his power and honour. This position is his reward for humbling himself on earth. Now, he uses his authority for God’s glory and for the good of his people. Jesus will also bring all who belong to him to heaven, so they can be with him forever. v. 2: Jesus serves in the true tabernacle, the real sanctuary in heaven, not one made by humans. The old tabernacle had an outer part for sacrifices (pointing to Christ’s death) and an inner part behind the veil (pointing to Christ’s work in heaven). Jesus did not serve in the earthly tabernacle, but after finishing his sacrifice on earth, he now serves as our High Priest in heaven, interceding for us and ensuring our prayers and lives are accepted by God because of his sacrifice. v. 3: Every high priest must offer gifts and sacrifices to God. In the Old Testament, priests offered sacrifices to cover sin and offered incense to make the people’s gifts pleasing to God. Jesus, as our High Priest, had something much greater to offer: he offered himself, his own human life, as the perfect sacrifice on the cross. He also offers his righteousness and prayers for us, so that everything we give to God is accepted through him. v. 4: Jesus must serve as High Priest in heaven, not on earth. If he were still on earth, he could not be a priest according to the old law, because he was not from the tribe of Levi. The old system was only a model of the real, heavenly things. Jesus fulfills what the old priests and tabernacle only symbolized—he is the true Priest in the true sanctuary, representing us before God forever (Hebrews 8:4-5 a). – The Old and New CovenantThis section explains how Christ’s priesthood is far greater than the priesthood of Aaron. The apostle shows that Jesus is the Mediator of a better covenant. It is important to understand the difference between the old covenant of the law and the new covenant of grace. The old and new covenants show God’s plan for salvation, first by rules and then by grace through Jesus.v. 6: The ministry of Jesus is more excellent because he is the Mediator of a better covenant. This new covenant is built on better promises that bring real hope and help to people (Hebrews 8:6 b). v. 7–8: The old covenant was not perfect. God found fault with it because it could not make people truly right with him. It was full of rules, but it did not have the power to change hearts. It was only meant to prepare people for Christ (Hebrews 8:7, 8 c). – v. 9: The old covenant was made with the ancestors of the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. Moses was the Mediator then. God cared for them and led them out of Egypt. But the people did not stay faithful to the covenant. Because of this, God stopped protecting them. God promises to be close to those who keep his covenant, but he turns away from those who reject it . v. 10: God promises in the new covenant to put his laws into his people’s minds and write them on their hearts. This means God will help people understand, remember, and love his laws. They will want to do what God asks, not just follow rules. This change in the heart is the foundation of the new covenant (Hebrews 8:10 d).God also promises, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. God will do everything for them that a true God can do. The people will love and obey God in return, and God will give them the strength to do so. v. 11: In the new covenant, everyone will know God for themselves, from the least to the greatest. There will not be as much need for people to teach each other about God, because the Holy Spirit will help everyone understand. In the old covenant, people needed priests and teachers, but now God’s Spirit will teach all believers directly (Hebrews 8:11 e). v. 12: God promises to forgive people’s sins completely. He says, I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and iniquities I will remember no more. This forgiveness is free and full. God chooses not only to forgive but also to forget their sins. This is a key blessing of the new covenant (Hebrews 8:12 f). v. 13: The old covenant is now old and disappearing, just like a candle is no longer needed when the sun rises. After Jesus came, the old way was no longer needed. The new covenant remains forever (Hebrews 8:13 g).
