‏ Hosea 3

God’s Love Shown through Hosea’s Marriage

This section shows how God’s relationship with Israel is pictured through the prophet Hosea’s own marriage. Hosea’s actions are used as a lesson to Israel. God tells Hosea to love his wife again, even though she has been unfaithful. This is a symbol of God’s unfailing love for His people, even when they turn away from Him. The chapter teaches about mercy, discipline, and hope for restoration.

v. 1: God says to Hosea, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by a friend, and is an adulteress, just as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.” . This means Hosea must show love to his wife again, even though she has been unfaithful. This is a picture of God’s love for Israel, who has worshipped other gods. The “cakes of raisins” are used in idol worship, showing how Israel has turned away from God. Still, God’s love continues.

v. 2: Hosea obeys God and buys back his wife for fifteen pieces of silver and some barley . This shows that even when Israel is in trouble and far from God, He is willing to pay the price to restore them. It is a lesson about redemption and God’s willingness to rescue His people.

v. 3: Hosea tells his wife, “You must stay with me for many days; you shall not be a prostitute, nor belong to another man; and I will be the same to you.” . This shows that after being redeemed, there must be a time of discipline and faithfulness. God wants His people to leave their old ways and be loyal to Him.

v. 4: The prophet explains that the children of Israel will live for a long time without a king, prince, sacrifice, or idols . This means that Israel will experience a period of loss and waiting. They will not have leaders, worship places, or idols. This is a time of discipline, to help them turn back to God.

v. 5: But afterward, the people of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come in awe to the Lord and His goodness in the last days (Hosea 3:5 a). This is a promise of hope: after a time of discipline, God’s people will come back to Him with respect and trust. They will be restored, and God’s goodness will be shown to them.
