‏ Job 25

God Exalted and Man Abased.

In this short chapter, Bildad stops arguing with Job about the prosperity of the wicked and instead focuses on how great God is and how small and sinful people are. Bildad’s speech reminds us that if we understood more about God’s power and holiness, we would be more humble and less likely to argue about smaller matters. He shows that God is all-powerful and pure, while humans are weak and unclean by nature.

v. 1-2: Bildad describes God as the ruler of everything. Dominion and fear are with him, he makes peace in his high places (Job 25:2 a). God’s authority reaches everywhere, and the angels in heaven obey Him without question. Even the natural world is under His control (Daniel 4:35; Psalm 115:16 b).

v. 3: Bildad says God’s power is unlimited. Is there any number of his armies? And upon whom does not his light arise? . God has countless angels and all creation is under His command. His light and care reach everyone in the world (Psalm 19:6; Matthew 5:45 c).

v. 4: Bildad then asks, How then can man be justified with God? Or how can he be clean who is born of a woman? . He means that compared to God’s holiness, humans cannot claim to be righteous or pure. We are all guilty and need God’s mercy (Psalm 51:4; Romans 3:4 d).

v. 5: He says, Behold even to the moon, and it does not shine; yes, the stars are not pure in his sight . Even the brightest things in creation, like the moon and stars, are nothing compared to God’s glory and purity (Isaiah 24:23 e).

v. 6: Bildad finishes, How much less man, who is a worm? and the son of man, who is a worm? (Job 25:6 f). He says people are weak and unclean compared to God. This should make us humble and thankful that God still cares for us (Psalm 22:6 g).
