John 11:38-40
v. 38: Jesus, still deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance (John 11:38 a). Jesus was filled with emotion as he faced the reality of death and the sorrow it brings. v. 39: Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said, “Lord, by this time there will be a bad smell, for he has been dead four days.” . Martha hesitated because she knew Lazarus had been dead for days, but Jesus asked for the stone to be removed, showing he was about to do something miraculous. v. 40: Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” (John 11:40 b). Jesus reminded her to have faith. God’s power would be shown in what was about to happen.
