‏ John 11:47-48

v. 47: The chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. They said, "What are we accomplishing? Here is this man performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation" (John 11:47-48 a). They were afraid Jesus would cause a movement that would threaten their power and bring Roman punishment on them.

v. 48: The leaders were more concerned about losing their position and their nation than about the truth. They worried more about politics and their own interests than about doing what was right in God's eyes (John 11:48 b).
